A few months back an offer showed up in my inbox to design a shirt for an organization that raises awareness for menstrual inequity. Menstrual inequity? It took me a minute. Despite the interjection of my privilege I tried to fathom this small, albeit dark corner of reality. Not having the means to look after a normal bodily function would have mental, emotional and physical consequences. For people living in under resourced areas and/or antiquated societies, it seemed a cruel insult to injury.
I’m grateful to @wearethecycle for allowing me to contribute to their cause. The design depicts an ambiguous domestic scene where two people, casually share a bed. Thats it. Anything else is projection. Nudity and beds don’t always reference sex. Discussions on anatomy are not always vulgar. But these things often illicit lazy interpretations and projections. Intimacy, care and connection can look like many things. Like educating a child about menstruation and the changes in their body. Or like two people resting together, simply because they’re on the same cycle.
Available for 3 wks via @everpresshq, each t-shirt sale directly funds this life-changing program. #buyashirtbreakthecycle

Last few days of our push to bring menstrual programmes to 1000 people. Not that many people when you think about it and we are 25% of the way there. Listen, no one twisting your arm here but people will be impressed by your taste and altruism. It’s a great shirt. I made it. @wearethecycle

The crazy thing about @warbyparker is that their glasses come with a life time guarantee of slow motion whenever you take them off and let your hair down.

“There was a time where every fucking photo shoot I went to, that was the rack. I just would go through all the flower stuff like, ‘No, I can’t.’” @jemima_jo_kirke has since stopped wearing florals almost altogether.
At 38, she’s scrapped the characters, though certain predilections remain. The thrift-store-fueled T-shirt collection she began in her teens persists, as does her penchant for great denim and unique vintage. “Now I’m like, ‘Oh, there’s a point to this whole expression thing.’ You get to do it on a daily basis. I get to wear a dress if I feel like it, but I get to wear jeans if I feel like it,” she muses. “I guess this is just me finally being authentic with my clothing.”

This month, 1.8 billion people across the world will menstruate – nearly a quarter of the world’s population.
But menstrual taboos, lack of toilets and little or no access to period products, mean that millions are trapped in a cycle of menstrual inequity.
Together we can break that cycle.
This International Women’s Day we’ve launched a limited edition t-shirt, designed by @jemima_jo_kirke to help raise critical funds for The Cycle’s work. Available for just 3 weeks via @everpresshq, every t-shirt sale will directly fund our life-changing menstrual health programmes and help to break the cycle of menstrual inequity.
