Last week, both of our cars were stolen in our driveway at 2am in a very “secure” gated community with 24 hour security. I learned a few things: 1. Thieves are targeting cars behind gates because homeowners think they are safer than without gates. 2. Thieves are looking for cars that have both side windows extended open which signals that their car doors are unlocked. Either the keys are in the car or if not and they can get into the car anyway, it is likely the garage door clicker is in the visor and will give them easy access directly into the home directly. 3. I realized all the homes in my sub community seem to turn off their landscape lights around midnight so the neighborhood is very dark except for the street lights. I now set all my outdoor lighting to stay on all night. 4. I am investing in an alarm system with audio, video and spot lights triggered by motion. 5. Lock your doors when you enter and leave your home, especially the door into the garage. 6. Call 911 if you see anything strange. I hope this helps.
