Stratford on Avon. My mother received the Pragnell award this weekend for contributions to Shakespeare. It just about coincided with his birthday so there was a huge procession to celebrate the Bard. Stratford was where my mum started her career, and she said to me afterwards “so, not bad eh?”. Not bad at all mum. A little ‘ASMR’ Emily Dickinson. It feels so awful when we mess up, and let people down. It’s a cliche but I do think we learn more from our failures. Emily felt like a terrible failure- she was virtually unpublished during her lifetime. Posthumously one of the greatest American poets. This poem has her humorous mischief bouncing around. Good to bring humour into most situations- especially when they feel bad. We own it, apologise, move on . Does anyone reading this feel better now? Hope so x
2 girls, Big dreams. Me and my sister Tasha visiting our Pa who was working in Africa when we were about 22/23years old. We ‘d just been up in that balloon. Tash achieved most of her dreams, but life broadens out in unexpected ways. Karen Blixen wrote ‘they say that the earth was made round so you couldn’t see too far ahead’. I found this black and white photo in my grandparents papers recently, they must have known K.B. who wrote the book ‘Out of Africa’- “if I had a dream of Africa, did Africa have a dream about me”. She famously fought for the land to be returned to the Kikuyu’s -its rightful owners. Tash went to Karen’s house many years later with her boys and sent me this postcard. I also returned a few times with @savethechildren and for safe drinking water. So, perhaps dreams are mutual x #africa #dreams #balloons

I never forget how lucky I am to wear these beautiful things however briefly , on loan, before I return to being a pumpkin ( Cinderella reference again). John Barrett. John did my sister Tasha’s hair for her wedding ( in towelling dressing gown on the day), bridesmaids ( me etc.). 2 nd photo when he accompanied me to the Met Gala . 3rd photo , John and Trinny ( he was God father to her daughter). John was basically a great family friend, and a great man. Self made hairdresser who came from Ireland to NY and managed to hard work his way to the big time- huge salons / huge clients , but to me what made him great was how many people he helped to find their feet. Huge lump and pricking tears as I write this as I shall forever be indebted to him – beyond grateful . John picked me up 25 yrs ago to the day , and held my hand over to the other side . He did this for many- legend in our community. I didn’t see him over the Covid years, few missed calls from both, then hearing he died last year.
