inspired by the students. a student at the Occidental College Gaza Solidarity Encampment asked me about political actions i knew of in my time in college. i remember watching with horror the start of Bush’s “shock and awe” that was catastrophic for the people of Iraq and we marched against the US bombardment there but no the student mobilizing wasn’t something big like this. the organization and thoughtfulness of these students is inspiring and desperately needed. as yet another genocide unfolds, brought on in large part by my own country, and as all our reps ignore our calls for ceasefire month after month, the students are speaking out in a big way that is actually resonating. and yet at UCLA and USC here in LA so many peaceful student voices are being suppressed by some at the schools themselves and police, and many violently so. what are we doing? free Palestine, ceasefire now thank you @oxyjvp @oxysjp and @maeve.richards for the thoughtful discussion, art, and photos bc my phone camera is broken. Maeve drew the eye

new @tashiwada song “Subaru”! feat @catfact @tashiwada and me beautiful video by @dicky_bahto from upcoming @tashiwada album What Is Not Strange? @rvngintl Repost: @tashiwada: Today we let fly “Subaru” from my forthcoming album What Is Not Strange? out one month from now on June 7 @rvngintl. “Subaru” was a fun one to make with the joyful interplay of Julia Holter’s soaring vocals, Ezra Buchla’s earthy viola, and my dance-like synths. Artist and filmmaker Dicky Bahto made a gorgeous, richly textured video that accompanies the music in parallel motion, sliding in and out of time In the words of friend Matt McDermott (who also wrote the wonderful press release for the album): “Subaru, the second single from Tashi Wada’s What Is Not Strange?, looks back to the avant-garde pop that scored Japan’s 1980s economic miracle, when famed composers like Yasuaki Shimizu and Haruomi Hosono were writing commercial music for digital watches and probiotic milk beverages. On this playful piece, which evokes a peaceful glide through the star cluster that slyly gives the song (and the auto company) its name, Wada signals a transformation from transcendent minimalism to a synth-driven sound folding in folk and pop songcraft, like some imaginary jam session between Harmonia and Discover America-era Van Dyke Parks.

“‘subaru’ is the bubbliest song tashi has crafted, and it is so much fun to sing. the regular pulse of the octave switch in the synth—at once a heartbeat and a landline busy signal—feels like a constant shift between two realms, almost fast enough that they are coexisting but never quite. and above this machine-like rhythm, the breathy and airy viola and vocal fly and glide around in tashi’s transcendent melody—spirited birds” @juliaholter on accompanying @tashiwada and ezra buchla (@catfact) on “subaru,” the latest offering from tashi’s forthcoming album what is not strange? @dicky_bahto’s video for “subaru” glows eloquently above, and the song can be heard alongside the first single, “grand trine,” at any number of links [in bio]
