South Georgia was declared rodent-free in 2018 after over a decade of work fundraising more than £10 million to deliver operations on island to bait and then survey to make sure rats and mice were no longer present. Rodent detection dogs were vital in the survey stage making sure there were no rodents remaining. Dogs still have a vital role to play as part of the biosecurity programme delivered by the Government of South Georgia & The South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) to ensure all visitors to the island aren’t introducing/reintroducing invasives. The South Georgia Heritage Trust helps fund this programme.
