Forgive me, I am still trying to process the sudden and shocking loss of Joe Lieberman. Joe had insisted I call him uncle as long as I can remember and that is what I did and how I have always felt, a bonus Uncle I was blessed to have in this wild world and I loved him as such.
He was a man I knew for my entire memory since adolescence as my dad’s best friend and in many ways his opposite. Joe was calm, lovely, gentle and truly the kindest man I’ve ever known. The Yin to my dad’s fiery, impulsive and intense Yang personality. Joes good cop to my dad’s bad cop. They loved working, traveling and living life together and that is exactly what they did. Before my dad died he revealed publicly that one of his greatest life regrets was not choosing Joe as his VP running mate.
Joe loved everyone and found the divine in everything – something that is unique in humans, let alone famous powerful politicians. He had no ego and remained grounded in every way a person could. Humble in a way that was almost jarring it was so amazing.
He was up for anything – hiking in the creek when no one else wanted to but my dad, staying up late telling stories and laughing… when he laughed he really laughed, deeply with his whole body and smile – and above all else he was always a true steady constant you could rely on for anything in a world filled with chaos.
When my dad died I didn’t know how I was going to survive the pain and I leaned on Joe and Hadassah for a lot of support. They would take me out in the city often and include Ben and I in their shabbat dinners – always making me laugh and telling stories about my dad, sharing how much we all missed him. They helped me heal without judgment giving me nothing but the love of family.
I know no matter what pain I am feeling it is exponentially worse for the entire Lieberman family. My heart is bleeding open for all of them….
Tomorrow is not guaranteed and every day is a gift. I am so grateful for all I experienced with Joe and Hadassah. What gives me some solace is two best friends are now reunited and we will all see them together again one day…
I love you Uncle Joe, don’t let Dad get you into too much trouble.
