Minouche the Mubarak of Columbia h/t @lisasaidz repost @sjp.columbia No peace for any of these corrupt administrators.
I’ve been calling the president of Columbia (an Egyptian) Minouche the Mubarak of Columbia, after the dictator of my country of birth whose tactics against protestors are in full display in the U.S.—send in riot police to assault and arrest protestors Every authoritarian around the world is watching riot police in the U.S. tear gas, pepper spray, assault and violently arrest students, journalists and legal observers and laughing in fascism 1st time I tasted tear gas was in 1994 when Egyptian riot police used it vs Cairo university students to prevent their march to the nearby Israeli embassy to protest the Hebron massacre. I moved to the US 6yrs later and I’ve spent the past 24yrs watching the US morph into Egypt. Who the fuck assaults and arrests students? Authoritarians do. Fascist fucks do

It’s May Day and there are so many reasons I’m an anarchist. This fascist fuckery on full display in the US is just one of them. I had a lot on my mind and shoulders to unload today and training was just what I needed. This is 135lbs. Police tear-gassing, assaulting, and arresting protestors is very triggering for me. And around campus is a minefield. Egyptian riot police broke my arms and sexually assaulted me literally within arms length of the university campus I went to for four years. I was on the frontline of a protest not on campus but on the street that was right next to campus. I’ve been feeling hyper vigilant at the sound of helicopters and sirens and hate this fascist fuckery. Nobody should be assaulted and dragged away for protesting. Fuck the police here there and everywhere.
Challenge met! Today I deadlifted 200lbs. I am 56 and I weigh 156lbs. I’ve had 200lbs in my sight for a while. Travel, injuries, illness and the world taught me to focus less on number and more on strength and this journey I’ve grown to love so much. And today, I was ready! I think about that word “deadlift” a lot. What do I bring into the gym and place onto that barbell and then lift it as if I were channeling all that challenges me. What is deadweight and what am I lifting and where does it go? I’ve had a heavy week and lifting heavy has made me lighter. Thank you @jeanafanellifitness

NYC: May 16! Repost from @theafricacenter • Join The Africa Center on Thursday May 16th at 6:30PM for a special conversation that explores the influential legacy of Kenyan author Binyavanga Wainaina. Mona Eltahawy, Sean Jacons and Anderson Tepper will come together to revisit Wainaina’s body of work, his impact on African literature and reflect on their own perspectives and writing practices, fostering a greater awareness of the power and responsibility that comes with storytelling. The conversation will be moderated by Uzodinma Iweala, CEO of The Africa Center. “How to Write About Africa” is a provocative collection of essays that dismantles stereotypes and challenges conventional narratives about the continent. This posthumous collection offers a compelling and insightful critique, urging readers to reconsider the way Africa is portrayed in literature and media. Register today at the link in bio!
