Time for one of my favourite photos. Well done @scotlandteam #CalcuttaCup #AsOne
Took a break from book-writing (!) for a Good Friday walk along Troon beach this afternoon. The vibe was quite Easter/resurrection at one point!! Beautifully atmospheric.

I’m writing outside, basking in pleasantly warm spring sunshine while simultaneously being rained on by hailstones. Welcome to Scotland 🏴
Spring is coming 🌼
Happy International Women’s Day. A day to remember the trailblazers, the women on whose shoulders we stand, those who put the first cracks in the glass ceiling and paved the way for our generation and those who will come after us to achieve more than once would have been thought possible. But it is also a day to remember how many barriers and injustices women and girls still face today, and rededicate ourselves to the battle for equality – at home and across the world, especially in places like Gaza and Afghanistan where women are often disproportionately affected by war and oppression. Solidarity to sisters worldwide 💪 (The picture is of a plaque dedicated to the first woman to graduate in law from @uofglasgow and practise in the UK. I’ve been reading about her recently)
Sad farewell to Matt Brown earlier – @thesnp member for more than 50 years, former Irvine councillor, lawyer and one of my original Cunninghame South SNP ‘family’. Parties in Matt and Louise Brown’s house were legendary. He – like Louise – will be sorely missed.
Delighted to be part of this project. All royalties going to @refugecharity Read more about it here https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/mar/01/101-women-narrate-history-women-objects-audiobook
📚 Picked this up not really knowing what to expect and am really enjoying it. It’s a punchy and very funny campus novel which manages to satirise the culture wars without ever making too clear which side of the cancel-culture v anti-woke divide the author stands on – which is partly why it works, I think. Worth a read. @picadorbooks #bookstagram #book #reading
Gareth @garethjbrown13 was one of the many civil servants whose expertise I relied on when I was FM. He has now written this hotly reviewed novel. I’m just a few chapters in but gripped already – and can see why it’s a Sunday Times bestseller!
My TBR pile is sky high just now with books I can’t wait to read – which is a good feeling. Tonight’s enjoyment, though, is this by @v_v_ganeshananthan – set during the Sri Lankan civil war, it’s everything I love in a novel. Entertaining, moving, educational, and beautifully written. 📚📚📚 This is so good!!! The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn re-imagined from the perspective of Jim. It is heart-breaking and spirit-lifting, all at the same time and on every page. Percival Everett must be one of the best writers of our age. @panmacmillan @camilla_elworthy
Enjoyed reviewing Colm Tóibín’s new novel, Long Island (sequel to Brooklyn) for @newstatesman
