Today we recognize the birthday of singer, actor, and civil rights activist, Harry Belafonte.
In 1965, at the behest of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, #harrybelafonte organized the “Stars For Freedom” rally in Montgomery, Alabama — an electrifying concert that brought together spectacular artists, entertainers, and speakers to inspire some 25,000 marchers as they continued along their historic march from Selma to Montgomery.
Nina Simone was one of the performers that rainy evening in Montgomery, where she gave a rousing rendition of “Mississippi Goddam.” For the entire month of March please join us in marking the 60th anniversary of “Mississippi Goddam.” All this month we will be sharing historical facts and varied recordings of one of the most culturally significant and poignant civil rights songs, written by #ninasimone.
