The argument that Donald Trump and Republicans and are trying to move the United States away from democracy is not an ad hominem accusation. Trump’s Republicans have apparently concluded that they cannot achieve their goals with a system of government that gives everyone in the American electorate a voice. Americans who want to keep their system of government will have to vote in 2024 against those who don’t.
Trump’s financial desperation makes giving him access to U.S. secrets dangerous.
In this Trump era that often seems utterly unconstrained by shame, Rachel Maddow points out that American voters can have shame. “We can have shame about our political choices as a country in terms of who are are elevating as America’s face to the world.”
Particularly relevant given the media news from the past few days, this post is from the same interview with Nicolle Wallace from earlier this month as our previous post. In this portion Rachel and Nicolle discuss how the traditional partisan split in American politics has shifted to a split over support for democracy. It may make for some strange political bedfellows but the bottom line is a shared defense of our system of government.
The speed with which Republicans are pulling away from democracy as their preferred form of government is startling. This is not a distant, if-we’re-not-careful possibility. This is now.
From last Monday’s show, Rachel explains why we’re only now seeing the Trump hush money trial even though “Individual-1” has been part of our political lexicon for years.

“This is a crucial moment for us as a democracy, as ridiculous as this seems.” Rachel Maddow explains why leading Republicans bashing the U.S. justice system on Donald Trump’s behalf is a dangerous development in the erosion of democracy in the United States.

“This is B.S.—you were doing this as a dilatory tactic to help your political friend, your partisan patron, and for you to say that this is something that the Court needs to decide because it’s something that’s unclear in the law is just flagrant, flagrant bullpucky.” Rachel lays it out plainly with Chris Hayes and Lawrence O’Donnell.

Conservative anti-gay movement built on foundation of questionable credibility –
Rachel Maddow looks at just a small sampling of the many examples of right-wing leaders who were forced to resign from their anti-gay organizations after their own homosexuality came to light. However, multiple allegations of sexual misconduct made by men against Matt Schlapp, chair of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) have not driven him from leading the group, known for its anti-gay sermonizing.
After spending the morning in the courtroom for opening statements in Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York, Rachel braved the media jungle outside the courthouse. Rachel shares her impressions of the day and the case coming up in special coverage next hour!

For Donald Trump, a delay may be as good as a win. His supporters on the Supreme Court know this.
A criminal conviction is not a scandal in Trump World. That’s just how they roll.
Americans are going to have to step up to a new level of media savvy because the success of Russia’s manipulation tactics has only made other opponents of the United States want to get in the game.
“Democrats getting real about this election season also means getting real right now about what Trump and his allies are setting up to contest the election if and when they lose it.”

Who cares about the National Enquirer? Rachel Maddow explains the scheme at the heart of Donald Trump’s New York criminal trial and under-appreciated power of trashy supermarket tabloids.
If we lose our democracy, it won’t be because someone made a declaration and banged a gavel and it was done. It will be because we no longer expect that the mechanisms of democracy will function as they are meant to.
Donald Trump has such a way of being simultaneously a clownish buffoon and also someone who needs to be taken very seriously. His first criminal trial appears to be no exception.
Another example of weird Republican priorities. Solving that problem of… not enough child labor?
In addition to relying on the rule of law to maintain our democracy, cultural institutions play an important role in maintaining standards of conduct and acceptable behavior. American institutions have had varying success standing up to the pressures of the Trump era, but the Republican Party has exhibited a particularly catastrophic failure.
“I’ve never heard anything like this in the entire history of every controversy I’ve ever known about with the United States Supreme Court.” Rachel Maddow reacts to a NYT report that an upside-down American flag, reportedly a symbol of the “Stop The Steal” movement, flew over Justice Alito’s house shortly after Jan. 6.
