My #WCW today is shining a light on Lauren Ritchie (@laurenaritchie), an 18 year old Bahamian #ClimateActivist & student at @Columbia University in #NewYorkCity studying Sustainable Development and Political Science. She is also a writer for @browngirl_green and the founder of her own #sustainability blog @itsecogal.
In one of her most recent articles “Amplifying Black Voices in the Environmental Community”, Lauren discusses her space as a Black woman in a majority white field and how lack of Black, and non-Black POC representation within sustainability is counterintuitive to the movement.
Evidence continues to show communities of color are most affected by the climate crisis, however our voices are not being heard at the forefront of the movement to save our planet. Why?
“The short answer: we aren’t invited. Climate action cannot move forward until there is an active desire to transform the #green movement to be more inclusive and to give Black environmentalists the platform to share their innovation and unique perspectives. It’s about time that our voices and stories were no longer silenced and cast aside within the environmental community. It’s time for Black people to claim their rightful seat at the green table.” For more great environmental content, and to read more of this article follow —> @laurenritchie @itsecogal @browngirl_green #BlackAndGreen #LetsCreateTheFuture #AmplifyBlackVoices
Congratulations @ptnewkirk. And thank you for your contribution to this powerful story❤️
Young people across the world have taken to the streets (and now online) to demand action on the climate crisis, and my #WCW today is one of those amazing youth leaders.
Maureen Damen (@damenmaureen15) is a 16-year old climate activist & #HumanRights defender from Dakar, #Senegal. She is the co-founder of Fridays for Future Senegal (@fff_sn) a grassroots movement that began in August 2018 to protest against the lack of action on the #ClimateCrisis, and founder of Rise Up Senegal. Her favorite color is green and she loves the environment and everything that is related to nature.
Maureen became a climate activist in September 2019, inspired by activists like @GretaThunberg & @VanessaNakate1, an activist from Uganda. She was personally inspired by Vanessa, not because of her activism but because of her unheard voice for #Africa. Feeling like the voices of African activists went mostly unheard, and that there was not enough African representation, Maureen stood up and became another voice on the continent in the fight against climate change. To learn more visit fridaysforfuture.org and follow @damenmaureen15 and @fridaysforfuture.
“I don’t want to force anyone to be an activist, but I think everyone can help in their own way in this climate crisis. If climate change scares you, do one thing each day to help the environment.
Together, we can change the world.” #SaveCongoRainforest #ClimateStrikeOnline #letscreatethefuture
See you this Sunday!!! #shoblackmonday #showtime
Happy to be back for another week highlighting incredible #BlackWomenInGreenSpaces. This week I’m dedicating my #WCW to Freweyni Asress (she/her), a.k.a. @zerowastehabesha, an ecosocialist who began her transition to a zero waste lifestyle in January 2016. Freweyni is the founder of the Zero Waste Habesha (named in homage of her Ethiopian roots), an online community of Black and Indigenous organizers, creators, and cultural workers that was originally dedicated to sharing zero waste practices but has now evolved into a force for environmental justice as well.
As a community organizer and activist, @zerowastehabesha is drawn to making the zero waste community more inclusive. She does this by organizing communities to build resilience, address anti-Blackness in rural America, create resources for Black and Indigenous residents, and create and facilitate zero waste and environmental justice workshops for institutions. “It’s time to break the taboo of talking about racism. There’s not a lot of spaces to talk about these issues without feeling like you’re perpetuating the problem by talking about it, which is a total misconception.” Follow Freweyni @zerowastehabesha
