NYC brings out a different side of me. Something more authentic, genuine and happier. It makes me want to sing out this song loud as I walk the roads. It is freedom, liberating, and even the tough parts and the pain comes with a rainbow at the end of it. Ever since I moved back, I’ve been trying to live that side of me no matter where I am. And four years later, I still haven’t fully figured it out. Society, hate, trolls and the pressure to live confined in a box is stifling. I stopped trying to break through and bent under the pressure instead. I love this city, I love my people, ‘Madras is an emotion’ is true. I’ve always been proud of being Tamilian, so the flak I get for my accent/pronunciation sometimes does hurt, but only because of the feeling of invalidation that comes with it. I want to be my free-er self here and I’m a little disappointed in myself that I let the confines get to me. I also know many of my peers/friends who feel similarly but it’s hard to put into words.
