It is our great pleasure to announce Nickel Creek’s fifth studio album, “Celebrants,” an 18 track exploration of togetherness to be released in totality on March 24th! Today, you can listen to the first single, “Strangers,” and pre-order the album [link in bio]. If you happened to log into one of the live streams we did early in 2021, you saw us at the very beginning of the process. There were many trips across the country to write and make demoes, a constantly evolving shared-note of lyrics, and life-affirming collaboration with heroes @mikeelizondojr on bass and Eric Valentine (@nerdentine) in the producer’s (and engineer’s) chair, culminating in four weeks at RCA Studio A in Nashville. As much fun as we’ve had making music together over the years, this project broke the joy meter. We’re very proud of the results, and can’t WAIT to share them with you.

Despite EIGHT bus breakdowns (six of which were within a 10 day period), rainy load-in’s and soundchecks, delays and border crossings and all the stuff a four week tour brings i am tired and so happy and grateful for our crew and all of your who came out to the shows. It’s absolutely a dream come true for you all to have shown up the way you did. A snippet of a song called Meadow which is on the upcoming @nickelcreek record has some fun vocal-over-fiddle lines in it. There’s a bigger chunk that still sounds reeeeeal rough, but this is a bite-sized moment I had fun looping through.

2/3 and 3/3 of learning “Going Out” back in December. I made this first clip for Sean and Chris because I was proud to have made strides on something that had previously felt beyond my abilities (see 1/3 in this series). 3/3 is a good version of the part. (Always room for improvement of course:). The part is still challenging, I imagine I will be giving the pitch regular tune-ups (especially that sung G note while playing F#) for the duration of the tour. But is really satisfying when I get it right! It feels good to post this sort of stuff and hear that it’s encouraging or enlightening to some! Really excited to play all this stuff on TOUR!!!! Last night in Dublin we were honored by the presence of musical giants: Paul Brady and Andy Irvine. The music they have made together and separately resonates deeply with me (as it does with so many people!) and it was such a gift to get to have a guinness with them and as Paul said, shoot the shit.
Our tour documentarian (not to mention assistant TM and merch manager) @jodyapril has done it again. Thanks for always being there for us. (always. ALWAYS, riiiiight JODY!!!?!!) xoxoxox (but seriously please never leave okay byeeeeeeee.)
1/3 I filmed this in December when I realized I was having to learn-how-to-learn some of these more challenging new bits of @nickelcreek music. Sometimes I feel like since I’ve been a fiddler for a while I “should” be able to just play whatever I want without too much trouble. Or I get embarrassed when I have to do really foundational work to truly get a handle on what I’m trying to do. But that’s where the first victories are! I’m SO grateful to have had teachers and mentors who taught me to break things down. WAY DOWN. This clip is from a day back in December when I was preparing for our first shows in the UK. This is the first of three clips I made working on this new @nickelcreek tune called “Going Out.” I wasn’t able to sing while playing and then I realized I wasn’t even comfortable with the *rhythm of the vocal part. So I decided first to work on the rhythm and then worry about notes later. I didn’t need sheet music for the tune but found it helpful to *see where the vocal rhythm fell in relation to the fiddle melody, so I wrote both parts out together and that was my gateway to this clip of early progress.

UK, DE, UK, IRE, UK, NETHERLANDS, USA! We went through customs 7 times in 12 days and somehow we and all our instruments made it to every show! (Thank you @tonderfestival for adjusting for us to play later!) Thank you to @gaby_moreno and @aoifemaria and @samamidon for opening shows for us and of course @jeffpicker for all those sick bass solos. Thank you to our crew @justintamplin, Tim Springette, @katiemuldooon, @t_reit, @jodyapril, Chris Hill and Jarod Harmon for doing whatever it takes for these shows to happen. And to everyone who came to shows and made us feel so welcome!! We are so lucky. ❤️
