Nothing was planned, very little was recorded, but suffice to say walking the red carpet to my national anthem at Paul Schrader’s ‘Oh, Canada’ premiere made it abundantly clear I was right where I was meant to be.
From there, magical encounters took place I’m still processing and may or may not share… this night though… this was the night that set the tone.
The film was a poem and a confession of lies at the end of a celebrated man’s life… so much of being an artist feels like a lie… but it’s not… to live beyond social expectations is actually profoundly brave and true. To see this life for what it is and make it as beautiful as you can possibly imagine.
We want concrete reports and accounts of events, but that isn’t what interests me. Courage interests me. Going for it. I look for the spark, the glow, the warmth, the knowing glances, the moments when we are carried by flings and fleeting soul-stirring conversations, by opened doors, and ideas not fully formed… by crowds of wanderers following their hearts… dancing… and then that deep breath… right now this is it… this is it… I made it here and it is all so perfect… so much more than I expected… right here like this… the sea and sun and gulls and grand hotels and strange genius… pure chaos and absolute magic… and then home… to return home to heart… reconnected… then to dream again… to return to the legacy, the mastery, the creation, the family after flying free… having touched fellow travelers and far reachers who also return to someplace deep and sure… it’s amazing to dress up and be photographed… but the best part is removing the uncomfortable shoes at the end of the night… barefoot… and to make meaning of it all… that which seems so meaningless… ridiculous in many ways… but that’s how we play… how we see each other in the best light… before the impending retrospective dot connecting, map-making of the next chapter of who is who for what how?
