The narrative around hair and womanhood is mired indeep history and politics of class, caste, power, culture, religion….I know it’s a signifier of many things that have been used to control and to disrupt.
But what does it have to do with me?
This is the second time I walked away from an infuriatingly regressive situation at work and my instinct was to shave a part of my hair off. And both times i felt an immediate sense of freedom.
I have been told repeatedly that hair like this will limit my choices at work as an ‘Indian woman’.
Are we not already working in a very limiting situation?
This is not to be edgy, bold, wild etc , it’s an instinct to feel lighter and not succumb to some notion of viability as an actor.
My hair can grow back, it’s in the public space unlike my ovaries but it’s also personal and changeable.
So chal yaar , I cut my hair and wore the brightest colour I had and went and saw five beautiful films.

A Living Room, indeed!!

There was a time ten years ago when I found it difficult to care for the simplest of plants. COVID became the turning point. The need to learn how to grow, compost, prune, cut out diseased bits…all of it became life lessons.
I have no experience or a Gardner to take care of them. I got cuttings, bulbs, seeds from all my travels, nothing store bought and talked them into growing with me.
Pruning and preening with them every morning is a joy.
No green thumb just a need to make city living possible.
A Living Room, indeed!!

A man and his monkey friend, both loved wearing hats.
Beeswax miniatures made by my friend Pablo and they are hanging from a plant above my study table.
Pablo got to meet my charming pappa in law, Howard and tried on his 35 year old Stetson. How things thrive, when you take good care of them, both people and things.
Happy Sunday!
Happy Vishu. Shubho Nobo borsho. Happy Baisakh!!
