14th of April 2018 was the date @weareakashik released the music video for “Villupaattu”. It should be my happiest day as I had worked for over 2 years, to research and document the art form, before finally finishing the audio and visuals. However, for the past 5 years, Tamil New Year has become the most melancholic day of the year for me.
As moments spent with Poongani Amma flood my heart, through this time of the year. I recall vividly, her frail yet strong gestures, fierce yet warm smiles and her then weakened yet indomitable spirit. I recall being changed for life. I recall feeling my purpose as an artist, deepen.
Just like me, she was a trailblazer. A force to reckon with, way before my time! I think about the kind of obstacles she would have faced back then, as a female Villupaattu artist. And it reminds me that I can do this. That I must keep going and that I have no excuses not to lead my dreams.
I thank the Universe for giving me the opportunity to put out this song of mine, before her time was up. I had the honor, to bring her glory, back to her.. in time. Poongani Amma passed away months after we released the music video. I had the chance to hand her, her roses.
I pray that the nation of India and its people, would cherish their trailblazers and ancient artforms, better. We can, do better. We must remember our roots and become custodians of our history and music. Just as they were, through their storytelling.
I know, I am a better artist today, because I met her.
I know, I will forever be guided by her spirit.
I know, I will never stop telling my stories through rap, also known as Villupaattu, back in the days.
I will forever keep her legacy alive. I can’t do that without all of you. So, thank you for the continued love on this song and for immortalizing it to an irreplaceable position. 🌹
