Nippon Daisuki! It is so wonderful to be back here. I don’t know if I have ever been to Japan in the winter, and the sleek beauty of Tokyo is only enhanced by the Mystic atmosphere of a snowfall. The schedule of the Eras tour is such that every few months we have a break to go home and re-enter civilian life and reflect briefly on the wild experience that is taking this amazing music all over the world. I don’t take it for granted that I get to look down and see so many different joyful faces every night that I go to work. The folks that I get to ride this river with- some of the flat out best musicians and most wonderful people. And all this, after an absolutely astounding night for Taylor at the Grammys. And sometimes, when you reach the top of the mountain, you decide to go ahead and build a mountain of your own on top of it. I am inspired by her creativity, ambition, discipline, and kindness daily. Also, it needs to be mentioned that spending more time with his absolutely astounding @mikelullcustomguitars for is only revealing more of its balanced excellence. Thinking always of my absolutely amazing wife @karahheller whose strength, foresight and rock solid love allows me to have it both ways: I get to tour this beautiful world and see your amazing faces, and come home to healthy. Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) I’m honored, grateful and proud to be a part of this. This album, that brings decade-old memories rocketing back, as well as this Taylor’s Version quest, where an artist bends and breaks rules to reclaim her art. Maybe most of all this group of people- who give nothing less than their best, who share their gifts and expertise with joy, who stare down increasing leaps of faith with a flinty look in their eyes and a smirk on their lips. I love this record. It’s perhaps her Rock Record. Long songs, blazing solos, deep, challenging arrangements. I couldn’t wait to dig in to it. Recording it was a joy. There was just something in the architecture, the accent, the hilly adventure of the cities (Edinburgh & Oban) and the instinctive cheer of the people that made this place feel like home. I loved the dynamic weather (yes really) and wouldn’t you know the scotch was really really good. I was sorry to leave and hope to be back soon.

I realize most people see her as a vibrant, fearless and truly badass standard bearer of funky badness, but she also needs to be called out. I got a message a while ago from the fine folks at @balaguerguitars who invited me to try out their beguiling online guitar and bass custom builder. It’s the kind of message bass-nerd dreams are made of. Behold the results! The mighty Balaguer Goliath. Sporting a stunner of a flame maple top, solid construction, humbucking pickups with a saucy option to split, and the @darkglasselectronics Tone Capsule, the Goliath handily navigated any style or technique I threw at it. Shepherding 3 huge personalities around a garden shop, answering questions, deciding, always deciding, weighing options, monitoring moods and glucose levels, always churning the long term so it benefits us in the most important ways. I think one of my favorite things about you is that you cherish experiences over stuff. Bring on the Michelin stars, vacations, cool parts of a strange town, the vacations, the memories.
