A small excerpt from last week’s live q&a
Someone asked me what’s my writing process lately. In the words of the great Leonard Cohen, “If I knew where songs come from, I would visit more often”. I wish there was a process I could rely on, but lately it feels as though I’m staring very lengthily at a dark vacant hole within myself, and effortfully trying to make out shapes in the darkness. In bad days, I’m completely dragged by that hole and swept away, and spend days trying to knit myself back together. There is a specific suffering in trying to translate the untranslatable, or to impose a structure to the infinite abstract, and there is a great danger in being so close and aware of it. Heeding to the formless Siren‘s call. And then …there is a moment of grace, that I cannot really say how or why it happens, when suddenly the song is found. Not written, but found. I don’t know if it’s the accumulation of grasping feebly at the abyss for so long, or if it’s just sheer chance. Any artist that has integrity will admit that true songs are never written, but are always found.
