This is one of my favorite pics of my dad, who died in 2005. One of the most memorable times I spent with him was once when he and Mom came out to New York to visit and he asked me, in his quiet but unmistakingly meaningful way, to take him to the National @baseballhall Of Fame in Cooperstown. I’ll admit I dragged my feet, cause it took some planning, I even rented a car and it’s a three hour drive. But Dad was a huge baseball fan. And I always knew this but I didn’t fully understand the depth of his love for the sport and its star players whom he idolized until we finally got there, and my opinion of his relationship to all of it changed instantly. He wept openly as he wandered the museum and took in each of the tributes to his favorite athletes, choking up whenever he spoke the entire time. He said something that I heard him say several times in the latter part of his life; when he came with me as my ” 1″ to the Kentucky Derby, when we sailed into the port of his birthplace, Hong Kong, on a cruise, and on this day at the Baseball museum: “I never thought I’d ever be here…I never thought I’d see this.” It was so moving to watch him pay his quiet respect to his heroes, I was a bit ashamed I hadn’t fully grasped how deep the well of his feelings for them plumbed until this moment. Dad’s Favorite Baseball Player of All Time was Willie Mays. He grew up during the Golden Era of Willie Mays’ career in San Francisco. Dad marvelled (as so many did) not only at his accomplishments, but at his remarkable, trademark humanity. Willie Mays served as such a role model to my father; Dad often spoke of what a good soul he thought this great icon to be. It’s the news of Mr. Mays’ passing that serves as the impetus for this post – and for me to find this photo. Thanks, Willie, for the lifetime of joy and inspiration you gave my dad. You were deeply loved by him, and, as he is, you will always be very missed.

Here’s my mom with 2 of her 3 sons and their families! Everyone came cross country to the Big Apple to catch the play at the @atlantictheater and I’m as they say blessed. I don’t think my parents ever didn’t make it to a professional production I was in (unless I said “um…please don’t come to this one” lol) and my brother Barry and my SIL Doris and my 3 loving nieces run a close 2nd. @chao_time and I are finishing our run of this wonderful play which is all about family, being the Children of Immigrants, and the complexities of sibling love. So of all the people I know, these ones’ll get it.

Here is the Acting Company of @atlantictheater company’s World Premiere production of #WhatBecameOfUs by #ShayanLotfi, directed by @iamtherealchanginator, #TonyShalhoub, @chao_time, @wongbd, and @saghdashloo – even though we are all never on stage at the same time… Tonight is our final “double feature” where both casts of this beautiful two-hander perform for the same audience, separated only by an intermission reception for the theatergoers. This has been a very wild and wonderfully woolly experiment initiated by the playwright and this innovative, forward thinking theater known for bold choices. This weekend #RosalindChao and I play our final “us only” performances, after that Tony and Shohreh continue until June 29. For the record Ros and I are old chums from way back, which at times deeply informs our work, and I’ve always wanted to have anything whatsoever to do with Mr. Shalhoub. Also, Shohreh is quite the legend. A funny and moving experience for both the actors and the audience. My “Gelyu Harem pants” are by @kidoriman_lifestyle!
Street clothes blocking rehearsal for the #NationalMemorialDayConcert @memdaypbs is really a wonderful experience. I will probably never think of #MemorialDay, a day to feel the weight of our fallen heroes, the same way again. It’s not all (just) sunscreen and BBQ people! Especially now when fighting for our freedoms and the principles of our democracy are so important. Take a second to respect and acknowledge the commitment and sacrifices of our military men and women this weekend! This beautiful, stirring concert airs live (tomorrow) Sunday, May 26 8PM/7central on @pbs or you can stream it on the @pbs @youtube channel. Tonight we bid adieu to the “Orange Cast” of @atlantictheater company’s tender and bold production of #WhatBecameOfUs by #ShayanLotfi directed by @iamtherealchanginator As I often do on closing nights I’m considering changing up my lewk because I can finally no longer be fired. This was one for the books.

We opened #ShayanLotfi’s #WhatBecameOfUs at @atlantictheater the other night. It is a lovely, funny and moving play and this is not only its #WorldPremiere but Shayan Lotfi’s theatrical debut, which if you’re familiar with this play is an astonishing fact. The play spans the lifetime of a sister and brother who are the #childrenofimmigrants and discusses how where we are born and when we are born can affect our relationship to our parents. On opening night day I really wanted to wear my new Chinese Am Railroad Tshirt from @1587sneakers, a company I admire. This is by no means a paid promotion, but @instagram offered me a convenient product tag so I tagged it, because I believe in this company. This weekend, I feel sincerely privileged to celebrate the hard work, accomplishments and sacrifices of some American heroes. This is a mindfully bipartisan event, and almost feels like I’m “taking back patriotism” by participating, and I’m happy to share that I’m doing so with pride and joy. There are some INCREDIBLE stories being told in this, shared by storytellers and actors. The concert is live on @pbs this Sunday. It is moving and stirring and inspirational as it should be. And I really hope I can get some face time with @ruthieannmiles whom I greatly admire. Hope you can catch this! Thanks @fogelsean for inviting me to this classy party. @memdaypbs

Only Shayan Lotfi’s beautiful words will be the same. The human element shows both what is unique to us and our communities, and so much of what is shared and universal.
