Ticking off an all-time bucket list item for Mum’s 70th birthday … BY TAKING HER ON THE FRICKIN’ GHAN. Feeling damn lucky to travel close to 3000km through the heart of the continent on such an iconic railway, starting in Adelaide on Kaurna Country, then chasing sunrise at Marla on Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land, having stunning off-train nature experiences at Mparntwe (Alice Springs) and Katherine on Jawoyn Country, before finally pulling into Darwin on lush Larrakia Country. It’s wild. You honestly can’t quite comprehend the scale of Australia until you experience it like this. But what was really staggering for this daughter of a restaurateur (Mum) and son of a restaurateur (me) was the all-inclusive* wine list and menu of fine-dining quality local fare (think: crocodile dumplings, local barramundi, buffalo massaman curry, mango parfait) they served up every day. We’re still processing how these peeps make food this good on a moving vehicle. Shout out to the entire Ghan crew who gave us the Gold Service (literally) treatment, especially Yohan, Rami, Darlene, Ralph and Imogen for taking extra special care of Mum. And massive thanks to the utter legends at @journeybeyondrail for making a lifelong dream of Mum’s come true. If you’re considering one of their iconic trips between Adelaide and Darwin (The Ghan), Sydney and Perth (Indian Pacific), Brisbane and Adelaide (Great Southern) or Adelaide and Melbourne (The Overland), follow them on Insta for inspiration and travel porn. Can’t recommend it enough. Oh, and happy birthday to the Ghan too. Lookin’ good for a gal who’s just turned 95. *N.B. “All-inclusive” is now my safe word. #journeybeyondrail #theghan #australiabytrain #gifted

Each year, I stumble across something I fkn adore so much that I end up buying it over and over for months as a birthday present for peeps I love. Right now, it’s @sarahthefirth’s graphic novel. Every page of this book is a goddamn gift, and her illustrated essays – which somehow tap into every existential anxiety looping in my head lately – marries philosophy, science, literature and therapy so beautifully. And as you can see, every page is also its own illustrated masterpiece. Needless to say, follow @sarahthefirth if you’re not already. And throw every award at her for this book. She’s the real deal. P.S. Sorry in advance for spoiling the surprise to all my friends who are going to get this on their birthdays. And if you’ve gotten it already, just wrap it up again and pass it on to someone you love, ‘cause they’ll love it too. P.P.S. If you’re in the US, Canada, UK or Europe, lucky you. ‘Eventually Everything Connects’ comes out in your part of the world this month.

Thanks so much to the Australian cast of the Laramie Project for supporting the Trans Justice Project’s crowdfunder. Help support our work to continue in the year ahead – link in bio. The Laramie Project is the true story of the aftermath following the 1998 murder of 21-year-old Matthew Shepard, that catalysed revolutionary LGBTQIA legislative change in America. This Sydney reading was an Australian first – commemorating the 25th anniversary of the development of the play and International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. The cast was joined by Dennis Shepard – father of the late Matthew – who delivered his powerful courtroom speech from the 1999 trial. The production aims to make people reflect on how far LGBTQIA rights have come, and how far we have yet to go. An incredibly timely piece in an age where trans and gender diverse people, and the entire LGBTQIA community, is facing increasing attacks on our safety, rights, and health care. Thank you so much to the cast for taking part and supporting our work: Benjamin Law, Tony Sheldon, Casey Donovan [not featured], Lyndon Watts, Benjamin Law, Zindzi Okenyo and Nicholas Brown.
