Beethoven’s 9th symphony premiered 200 years ago today in Vienna. The German composer’s works have long been a key part of the Divan repertoire. Maestro @dbarenboim has recently written an opinion piece on the power and teachings of this masterpiece. ✍️ “By all accounts, Beethoven was courageous, and I find courage an essential quality for the understanding, let alone the performance, of the Ninth. One could paraphrase much of the work of Beethoven in the spirit of Gramsci by saying that suffering is inevitable, but the courage to overcome it renders life worth living.” ➕ Find the link to the article on our stories 🎥 Video: Daniel Barenboim and West-Eastern Divan Orchestra with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and soloists Anna Samuil, Waltraud Meier, Michael König, René Pape. “The concert that I was privileged to conduct on 12 November 1989 was an expression not only of the joy that the musicians felt at being able to play for their countrymen from East Germany, and the joy of the audience on hearing the Berlin Philharmonic, but also the need that people feel to make and hear music at a time of intense emotion.”, writes Daniel Barenboim in his memoir “A Life in Music“ about the 1989 concert for citizens of the GDR. 🎹For Daniel Barenboim, Mozart “had the perfect combination between seriousness, talent, genius – light-heartedness and facility.” Since 1968, he has regularly performed Mozart’s piano concertos with the Berliner Philharmoniker. This video, directed by Jean-Pierre Ponelle, was produced during a recording of the last eight concertos in the late 1980s. ✍️ “Daniel Barenboim’s belief in the unifying power of music is unshakeable. Together with his musicians from Israel and Palestine, he shows how it is possible to perform together in peace.” Helga Rabl-Stadler, former President of the Salzburg Festival, has published an opinion article in Die Presse about the 25 years of the @divanorchestra and the important work of the many “Education Through Music” projects initiated by Maestro @dbarenboim. 🔗 Find the link to the article (in German) on our stories or diepresse.com We are looking forward to our performance at the @salzburgerfestspiele on August 15 with @anne_sophie_mutter.

Cheers to the 2024 @barenboimsaidakademie graduates! Maestro @dbarenboim and the academy congratulate you on your exceptional work and dedication. Your growth, especially under challenging circumstances, has been truly extraordinary. Maestro Barenboim was present at the ceremony and presented the graduates with a letter in which he shared his reflections on this complex academic year and the foundational vision of this project, initiated together with Edward Said. “I want to take this opportunity to reflect on the core values on which the Barenboim-Said Akademie is built and which to me remain unchanged. At the heart of our educational project lies a profound commitment to human encounter and a firm belief in the transformative power of truly listening to the Other. Each of you has a unique background and identity and here you encounter each other, guided by a common vision: through listening to each other, you make music together, you learn together, you grow together.” “Edward Said and I never pretended that an orchestra or an academy could bring peace and justice. Instead, we spoke of an “experiment in utopia,” an invitation to witness and imagine an alternative to the present: a reality of shared humanity, of equality and mutual recognition. “ ✍️ Read the full letter on barenboimsaid.de 📸 Maestro Barenboim and the graduating students after the ceremony at @boulezsaal.
