DJ Qualls Instagram – Hello and welcome to my Sunday things that I love post. Today, I’ve chosen these beauties to share. They are ancient Egyptian Ushabtis, Late Period 664 – 332 BC. They are made of a blue/green self glazing ceramic called faience. The Egyptians believed that the afterlife would be an extension of life on earth and, as Egyptian citizens, the gods would call upon them to do public works (kinda like jury duty). These little servant statues were believed to come to life when needed and act as a surrogate worker in the deceased stead. People of all classes were buried with hundreds of these. One for every day of the year and for every 10, an overseer or boss to make sure shit got done. Because of this, while cool as hell, they aren’t rare. There are millions and millions of them. The size and quality of your ushabti reflected your rank and wealth in life. Pharaohs had life sized ones made of gold. The poor had inch long faceless logs that look like suppositories. The large ushabti, which is 7.5”, came from the tomb of General Pakhaas, 380-343 BC. The other two, at a little over 5” would have belonged to an upper middle class person and are from the same burial. Ancient Egypt was a funerary culture. What you were entombed with would very much dictate your afterlife. Those beautiful hieroglyphics on their fronts are a spell from the book of the dead meant to awaken the ushabti when he was called upon to work. I won’t type it here because it ups the nerd factor to a level where I fear no one will have sex with me again. Anyway, I love learning about the ancient world; seeing how man thought about himself and his surroundings at different points in time. It reminds me how short our time on earth is and to relax, be a good man and everything will work out fine. *these ushabtis were purchased legally before Law no 117. #ancientegypt #thingsilove #ushabti #artcollector #art #arthistory #justinbieber #selenagomez #teamjacob | Posted on 30/Apr/2018 04:31:16
