A fortunate catch on the Mighty Mekong River. The Mekong Delta is the most productive inland fisheries in the world. Being the primary protein source for over 25 million people in South East Asia. Yet the Mekong river and its countless tributaries are being dammed for the first time in world history. Stopping it’s primary fish species from migrating and able to reproduce. The effects- a complete irreversible collapse of fish populations. An uncertain future for a significant part of the world that once provided food. #livingofftheland #fishkeeping #fishforfood #dams #removethedams #mekong #environment #threats #huntingseason #huntingandfishing #subsistence #survival #bushcraft #traditionalfishing
Explitives included so beware. This “invention” of bottled water infuriates me. FACTS: The world produces 1.5 BILLION plastic water bottles a day!! That’s close to 25 million tons of plastic a year is made and dumped on river, oceans landfills or burned to go up into the air as single use plastic bottles. Plastic bottles are made out of polyethylene terephthalate, a resin derived from petroleum & natural gas. These fossil fuels are heated up and mixed with water to create plastic. It takes roughly 2 liters of water to make a single 1 liter water bottle. Math= a 1 liter water bottle filled with water takes up 3 liters of water. Do the math on how much water is used up and what happens to all the contaminated water that eventually is dumped back into the environment. Today about 50% of bottled water is filled with spring water “that magically appears and magically is not going into its original destinations i.e streams and rivers. The other half of brands of bottles water comes from filtered tap water. The same places we get water out of our tap to do our dishes, laundy, water lawns, & flush our toilets etc. Same water from the gas station tap as the water you buy there Coca Cola & same company – Dasani makes over 40 differently disguised bottled waters all coming from the same taps of the same one bottling facility. Out of its hundreds of bottling facilities throughout the world churning out different arrays of soft drinks & the obviously even more profitable differently named bottled waters. Between manufacture & transportation, about 63 billion gallons of oil are used to supply the United States with plastic bottles each year. People use the excuse- well they say they can be recycled. Fact- less than 5% of bottles are able to be recycled. The other 95% again magically dissappear to fairy trash land- aka- out of sight out of mind. Here is the deal & what I think is the most important part. The luxury of living in a “1st world country & the USA” modern day infrastructure has taken enormous steps to source, treat, filter water for safe worry free drinking water. If we choose to buy more than care… More in coments below. #hateplastic #water

Successful hunt. Finishing high-school & 4 months into college going for my biology degree. Frustrated with not learning biology in classes like how I was teaching myself biology. Too immature, or too rebellious to appreciate the additional math, organic chemistry, & all the other classes I was taking. So I left, always hoping I would someday follow through with my degree- once I knew my ambitions of being an expeditionary biologist were really something that could be me. Taking a break/dropping out/running away, or going after my greatest dream w/ lazer focus & reckless abandon. I set off to Ecuador, 680$ for a plane ride, & 78$ to last me however long that would last me in the jungle. Starter cost was a 2 day bus ride from Quito to the end of the road, as deep as something w/ tires could go into the jungle. Very long story short- 8 months later, living in a household, a family, belonging to the Lowland Quichua tribe. There I learned 2 languages, 8 months w/out electricity, and all food coming from the garden, the rivers & the forest. They taught me everything I could learn in a day & every night for all those days. One of the elders in the household was the community Shaman. I of course was far more attentive to his knowledge & teachings than any of my college professors. He graciously gave me his dugout canoe & my family set my course for going deeper. 10 days in a canoe by myself & I might reach the territory of the Huaorani. Again, long story short. I lived w/ the #Huaorani & #Quichua on and off for the next 15 year . I have been taught by the best, and I can only take my own responsibility for how much I perfect their teachings. They have taken me very far… This is a photo from many years ago. Everyday we go hunting. We set off for prized prey but there is never a guarantee. But never a hunt comes back empty handed. With knowledge & drive to survive & feed families the forest provides. Found fruits, roots, honey, baskets full of fish harvested from creeks, birds or bird eggs etc. The hardest days & hungriest nights still bring knowledge that arms success the following days. This photo; the sought after prey. Pursuit hunt w/ spears. #hunt
What you can do in little ways to make the world a better place. And also ways to make places better than you found them. #1 biggest contributor to extinction and world wide wildlife decline is habitat loss. For many of our wild plant’s and animal’s last stand (the only places left for them to live) is on our private properties. With consideration, our yards can be stopping grounds for migrating birds and butterflies passing through and places for wildlife to also live their resident lives. Rather than our properties being poisonous places filled with fertilizers and chemicals that are landscaped with irrelevant bushes plants and trees, we can change these places into wildlife sanctuaries. We all can do little things to make our yards and properties also into places for wildlife to pass through, feed, find shelter and protection, and be a part of our lives. #rewilding #naturegarden #wildlifelover #porcupine #hazenaudel #naturenerd #kuhl #kuhlclothing #whitesboots #organiclife #yardwork #pendeltonclothing #landscaping “let them have dominion over all creepy thing that creepeth on earth” Genesis 1:26 meaning- take care of all creepy thing that creepeth on earth because they are all gifts to us that are keeping us earthly humans alive. It’s all of our responsibility to take care of this natural world.
You go outside you discover. On our last Sawtooth camping adventure we discovered all kinds of things! (You can see more on my previous posts) But this rubber boa was a camp favorite when we found it and it showed it’s gentle self off. We were excited to discover it, look at it closely and getting know what it’s personality and movements are like and then we’re all we’re just as excited to watch it slowly slither safely back to the place it was headed for. Then we all celebrate being present in such a beautiful place. Changing our mindsets from fighting and needing, and needing to change everything for our convenience to then being changed into allowing remote wild nature change who we are. And discovering that so much of the world is made of distractions from our peace. The trips I want to be leading are journeys that have been inspired by my learning and my life adventures. And now this shapes my life philosophy and further direction. Nature and people in nature have unwillingly forced me to be who I am. I have been very lucky/fortunate in my life. Luck come to those that are ready for the luck. So I’ve worked with lazer focus to be with nature and so- I get very lucky. My favorite thing is to share my fortunes. Most likely the luck I have, best gift I have, is to share my passions and my fortune with nature. We still have a few more openings for this Summer’s adventurers. If you’re thinking about joining I’d love to share this special place we found in the wild wilderness mountains. I used to work for Outward Bound Outdoors Schools. #outwardbound I took people from all over and took them outside, way deep into the woods, deserts and mountains.. Taught them how to adventure, challenge their limits, leadership, teamwork. We cooked outside together, we learn backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, river rafting, outdoor skills. I taught, but I learned and refined at the same time. It was and is my life. An amazing time in my life. We were proud humans out there. Even though we were summiting big glaciated peaks above 14,000 feet, rappeled insane cliffs, and rafted very hairy rapids, that was never what I wanted to do the most. I just wanted to do these things so I could have the skills and experiences to be in nature. Uniquely nature. I was so different than so many of my outdoor mentors and coworkers. Still to this day, many of them are world class mountaineers, rock climbers, and olympian whitewater kayakers. I am immensely proud of my cohort. But my skillset was being there with all that the natural world throws to me. Bugs, flowers, critters.. And how they all are there together. One adult Outward Bound Student later wrote me a letter. Poetically she said- I have a love affair with nature. She put it into words. And then I realized it even more. There was another poet in ancient Sufi readings “Sacrifice everything for true love If you are a true Human Being”. Wonderfully or tragically – my presence in this world. Winding down an adventure with a kindred spirit, @hazenaudel
Beginning the season right! Our Florida family camp went superbly. Of course it was about nature, bushcraft, adventure, teamwork, but the most important thing that came out of it was family time and families spending time with other families. I was taken to bliss connecting with – what soon developed into a tribe. Lots and lots of Spanish and Latin influence in this part of the world so we ate communal cultural dishes where everybody pitched in. I got to brush up on my Spanish and be re-energized about humanity. The Nature of Florida did not disappoint. Stay tuned for a youtube video about our creations, encounters, adventures, and giggles. The lineup of this year’s events like this, as well as more adult oriented classes, can be seen on: www.hazenaudel.com/adventures and www.patreon.com/hazenaudel #naturecamp #outdoorlearning #hazenaudel #bushcraftcourse #outdoorsurvival @miaminatureschool
Some shots of our most recent Sawtooth Wilderness camping trip and Outdoor course. If you’re not joining us, well, you’re not having the fun that we’re having… ONLY FUN PEOPLE ALLOWED! It’s pure wilderness. Meaning- it’s wild- the adventure is what the mountains throw at you. That’s what you get. Once you’re up there in the mountains you are at the mercy of the mountains. We encountered wildlife and experiences that you just can’t plan for. That’s pure adventure. Adversity brings the rewards. Looks at the sights and smell the kind of air that few people know how to work for. Once you know it, you get mountian fever. It’s a kind of nature lust that is incurable. It’s my kind of play ground. It’s where I love to teach. It’s what I love to share. Seeing people from all over the world come together as strangers, plop them into an awe inspiring place of pure nature where we work together to get to the tops of mountains and build camps and cook food together. Here is the place where strangers become life long friends. This year we have a bunch of folks returning again for this year’s events. Things that change people’s lives for the better tend to have returning customers. What an honor to reunite in our mountains! The wild flowers this year are insane!!! We have a few remaining openings for our last 2 courses: – 29th to August 1st trip Wilderness adventure trip – August 1 to August 4th RUGGED Adventure course. My dear friend made me a wooden pen, then the same day another dearest love asked for a love letter. I needed to slow down, sit down and take time to be grateful. This is what happened when the pen hit the paper. Ohh,, and my Dad back there taught me how to paint. #fatherlove #watercolor #illustration #handdrawn #childrensbook #farmlife #artistlife #painter #orangecat #bushcraft #survival #hazenathome
As you y’all know, I LOVE outside. My calling on this earth is to share what I love about the natural world. When we follow our hearts, life lays out a fruitful, windy path full of treasures. (Destiny) This path led me to be on international television, where I get to share my passions with literally millions of people all around the world. HOW FRIGGIN COOL IS THAT?! Television is only part of my path, yes it’s an accomplishment that continues, but there is nothing that replaces the feeling of sharing in person, Mano a Mano, aka- hand to hand/ face to face/ real life with real people that I can have a real relationship with. The true satisfaction and insurance in life are the connections we make with one another while we share this short time on this planet together. Television Explorations continue, but even more important to me are these relationships we make. Developing these events, being a teacher, is the way I’ve lived most of my life. So doing what I think I do best is what ((we) there is a team of us with similar desires making these trips happen)) are doing! See if you can visualize yourself joining us this summer. And keep up to date as we create more events and classes throughout the year. The WEST (the western half of the United States was where the last stands of Native Americans were to be finally relocated to the confines of reservations or to be exterminated). In the mid-late 1800s the US government sent news to all the Middle & Eastern United States and Europe. In pamphlets, flyers and in Newspapers, in enticing Bold letters “INDIAN LAND for Sale!”.  And it was for sale and was also available for free for determined homesteader in 60 acre parcels. Settlers came from across the Atlantic. Immigrants from Germany, Scandinavia, England (throughout Europe) and the Eastern & Middle United States went West, hopeful of opportunity, adventure and with pioneering fortitude – a new life. The Palouse, the region where I am from has the deepest topsoil in the world. Geological events deposited rolling hills of rich soil, that were underneath endless wild grasslands and timbered forests.  Land to be plundered, logged and tilled to oblivion, once it was planted with wheat, barley and oats it proved to be the most productive grain land in the world. History is horrific and fantastic, making today. This Barn was a part of American farming history. When I found it the walls had old leather horse collars hung on the walls for the teams of draft horses that originally pulled the plows, to the seeders, to the threshers. Upstairs in the loft was hay piled to the ceiling to feed the horses below during the long winters.  A black and White photo of this barn had the date 1896 written on the back of it where it lived in Fairfield WA (Deducting that it was build maybe in the 1890s). This barn was built by neighbors, hand saws, & horses. When I discovered the barn it was slated to be burned to the ground the following Spring, the widow’s farm was being leveled and sold to a predatory local Farmer. With unsympathetic pragmatism the local farmer wanted the barn’s presence to be replaced by 2400 square feet of flat ground and more wheat to accommodate todays mass, large scale, farming methods. The 60 acre parcels that supported families to live off of their own land and made communities have been all bought up & now transformed (read in comments) #barnhouse
