From @the_emancipator 👊🏿 • On Monday, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore issued pardons for more than 175,000 cannabis-related convictions, stating, “Marylanders should not continue to face barriers to housing, employment or educational opportunities based on convictions for conduct that is no longer illegal.” Moore’s executive order includes more than 150,000 misdemeanor convictions for simple possession of cannabis, per @guardian_us, and more than 18,000 misdemeanor convictions for use or possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia. Given that some have multiple convictions, Moore’s administration told the press that it expects to affect approximately 100,000 people convicted of misdemeanor charges. The move carries with it implications for racial equity. As per @aclu, Black people in the U.S. are more than three times as likely to be arrested for cannabis-related offenses as White people. Pardons for drug-related offenses are a small step toward remedying this inequity, but they don’t undo harm for people who have been victimized by racist drug policies. 💬 What more should states do? Let us know in the comments below. #maryland #cannabis #cannabissociety
Ever in Denver, friends in Denver, if you haven’t already, stop by @shopatmatter, a Black-owned and woman-owned bookstore. When I was in town recently for my #Barracoon tour, I visited their picturesque new space and signed books.
From @fictionaltiff 🙌🏾🙏🏾 • “Books I Read in 2024 Book Recs Pt. 4 Ibram X. Kendi writes in a way that brings a lot of knowledge, but still leaves the reader feeling like they’re reading a novel to be devoured. Not that we need to be entertained to learn about equality and unlearning racist structures, but it helps the learning process altogether when you’re able to read through something without feeling the need to put it down from downloading too much info in one sitting. This is how I also recently felt when reading On Palestine by Pappé and Chomsky and Ahed Tamimi’s They Called Me a Lioness (pinned post books). It was actually a rec quote by Ibram X. Kendi on the back of They Called Me A Lioness that encouraged me to pick up Kendi’s books sooner. When a nonfiction book teaches me a ton in a way that makes it easy to read and leaves me comfortable sharing it with others because it isn’t *too dense*, it becomes a book rec I’ll often return to. Anyway, this book, How to Raise an Antiracist is invaluable for educators, caregivers, and parents (of any race). There’s always things to learn and unlearn when the roots of our country have been founded on a hierarchy that harms everyone.” . #howtoraiseanantiracist #fictionaltiff2024recs #bookreviews #bookrecs #ibramxkendi
While in Florida yesterday, I visited Eatonville, the hometown of Zora Neale Hurston near Orlando. Eatonville is one of the first independent Black municipalities in the US, and the setting for many of Zora’s stories. I spoke about #Barracoon at the @officialzorafestival. Zora scholar @raechesny, her son, and I went over to a local park to see a mural of Zora. It is iconic. 🙌🏾

Wonderful to meet you too! 🙌🏾 • From @ihaveabook4that • Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! I had the immense pleasure of being in the presence of Dr. Ibram X. Kendi. As if that experience wasn’t amazing enough, he hung out afterwards and I got to meet him! *screams* During the conversation last night, he spoke on how books are a great way to have the difficult conversations with young people. I could not agree more. Naturally, I had to create a #FridayFive with an @ibramxk theme. How could I not? Books featured: 🌻Magnolia Sunflower* 🌙Good Night Racism 👶🏾Antiracist Baby 🦋The Making of Butterflies* 🖤Barracoon* He spoke extensively about this culture of book banning. One potent takeaway for me was when he said that the original book banners were enslavers. That hit different. The event was centered around his newest book, Barracoon, which I will share more on later! ✌🏾 *Books originally written by the amazingly talented Zora Neale Hurston then later adapted by Dr. Kendi.

I really do hope #Barracoon allows parents to affirm their own distinct languages with their kids. 🙌🏾 From @readandglowbooks • Cudjo’s story can now be shared with younger readers. In her mission to stay authentic in telling Cudjo’s story, Zora Neale Hurston wrote the majority of Barracoon in the voice of Cudjo who spoke a vernacular of English which happens to sound a lot like the Creole I grew up speaking in my own birth country. As such, I found the book fascinating to read. My daughter loves hearing the language I grew up speaking, so I could not wait to get the adapted version of Barracoon by Ibram X Kendi for her. History told directly in the voice and language of one who lived it. #barracoon adapted for young readers by #ibramxkendi
