When you are used to immunity, a guilty verdict will feel like injustice.
As catastrophic as Israeli forces dropping bombs that instantly wipe out families has been Israeli forces (and settlers) slowly starving to death countless Palestinian children and adults who somehow survive the bombs. Creating a full-blown famine in Gaza can never be justified as self-defense. Creating a full-blown famine in Gaza is indisputably a genocidal action. Source: @ajplus

With the coverage of student demonstrations shifting to police crackdowns, arrests and clashes with counter-protesters, one student activist told @the_emancipator that they want everyone to remember the reasons they’re out there. “I know that a lot of news wants to talk about the students and the potential showdowns with the cops because it’s sensational,” MIT Grad student Dan Zeno said, “but this is about freeing the people of Palestine.” On Tuesday, @the_emancipator spent the day with students at the Scientists Against Genocide encampment at MIT. People painted protest signs, danced to Palestinian music, restocked the communal food supply and engaged in thoughtful discussions about Palestinian liberation. Counter-protesters, who were carrying Israeli flags and posters depicting scenes from the Oct. 7 attack on Israelis by Hamas, occasionally roamed throughout the encampment and were almost entirely ignored. ✍🏻 Alex LaSalvia
#StampedfromtheBeginning premieres today on @netflix around the world. This morning, I watched the documentary for this first time with my parents, my brother, my partner, and our daughters. What a surreal experience, watching them view and interact with the film. A few minutes after it ended, Ma walks over to me as I sit at a table collecting my emotions, reflecting on the journey from book to film. She puts her hand on my shoulder, holds back tears and says, “It is excellent.” Not long after that, Sadiqa comes over with a huge hug and smile: “It is a work of art. It is a beautiful gift for Black people. Really everyone.” A gift. 🖤 I am in awe and gratitude for the fearless, innovative, ambitious, and love-filled village that created this gift. “Three decades and thousands of articles and hundreds of antislavery newspapers later, a tremendous number of Americans were no longer able to be manipulated by enslavers,” @ibramxk explained at @sxsw 2024. Dr. Ibram X. Kendi and The Emancipator’s Amber Payne laid out the template for how to take a single, powerful idea and reimagine it to reach entirely new audiences. For practical insights on how you can unleash the power of storytelling to create transformative change, check out the full session at the link in our bio.
I am always thinking about how to improve and grow as a researcher, writer, and thinker. Despite all the accolades STAMPED FROM THE BEGINNING has fortunately received, I always thought it could have been better. Now it is! Here is the second paperback edition of STAMPED. The book is a narrative history of how anti-Black racist ideas were created, spread, and deeply rooted in society. Focusing on the producers of racist ideas (rather than the consumers), STAMPED shows that these ideas were produced, not out of ignorance and hate, but to justify racist policies and normalize resulting racial inequity and injustice. I am proud of this new edition. Striking cover. Clearer writing. Cleaned up bad word choices and typos. A revamped and hugely expanded notes section. Available now wherever books are sold!

Israeli forces destroying Palestinian homes, universities, schools, hospitals, museums, places of worship, and cultural centers in Gaza is not about destroying Hamas, is not about bringing home Israeli hostages, is not about preventing future attacks on Israel. This is about devastating Palestinian communities. Across time and place, the genocidal destruction of life usually goes hand in hand with the destruction of what those lives have built. #permanentceasefirenow Data source: United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Graphic: @aljazeeraenglish
The Emancipator is the reimagining of the first abolitionist newspaper in the United States. The Emancipator is two years old today! When 19th century newspapers failed to expose and confront the horrors of slavery, a new abolitionist press stepped up to answer the call: the first of its kind, our namesake, The Emancipator. Through a steady drumbeat of narratives, education, research and commentary, these antislavery publications led a moral, conceptual, and political awakening that swept the world — forever transforming society as a result. This is what The Emancipator is here for: to reach those who agree with the goals of antiracism, those who don’t and those who simply want to learn more. For the last four years, the conservators of racism have tried every which way to stop people from reading HOW TO BE AN ANTIRACIST. Misrepresenting quotes. Outright distortions. Calling me terms they can’t define. Inciting hate and envy. Banning the book. Trying to fool people into thinking that antiracism is somehow the real racism. But the people will not be fooled or stopped. And I did not stop researching and self-reflecting and growing as a scholar, as I continue on my journey to be antiracist—a growth I annotate in this updated edition. And now, this new paperback edition of HOW TO BE AN ANTIRACIST has been on the New York Times bestseller list for five straight weeks. 🙏🏾
Today, I am pleased to share that the critically acclaimed graphic edition of Stamped from the Beginning is out in paperback! I worked with the celebrated cartoonist and historian, @joelchristiangill, to create this informative, engaging, and snarky graphic history of racist ideas. Across time and space, anti-Black racist ideas have manipulated people into believing that there’s something wrong with Black people; into believing that the racial problem is Black people. Racist ideas have covered up the actions of racist power, defended the cruelty of racist terror, and normalized the inequitable and unjust effects of the structure of racist policies and practices. The history of racist ideas really comes alive in this graphic history. To get your copy, go to the link in my bio or to your local independent bookshop. #StampedfromtheBeginning
