Happy Maws Day. Tae the moon n back. ❤️
Following John Law around Paris. Another 18th century mercurial Scot who fell out with his maw in Edinburgh, made his fortune gambling, killed a man in a duel in London, fled to France where he set up the country’s first central bank, became the richest private citizen in Europe and caused riots on the streets of Paris. Someone once said of Law ‘It’s a shame really that he did not once place limits on his boundless imagination for he has something great about him. He has perished for too grand a conception of himself’. A man who caused as many problems as he solved. YOLO.

The Edge of the World. Dir Micheal Powell, 1937. A take on the evacuation of St Kilda, (actually shot on Foula in the Shetlands). Each frame a masterpiece, with a young, incomparable John Laurie (arguably Scotland’s first movie star, later of Dad’s Army fame) leading the way with his unwavering Dumfriesshire twang & grit.
Who painted this? Them shadows. Nawteh 👌

Set the scene: Rodney is trying to get Delboy to come out with him, whilst they’ve got Boyce’s E Type Jag in their lock up that they’ve promised to look after. Mercurial John Sullivan (writer) with Lyndhurst & Jason working in perfect unison. The timing, rhythm, delivery & musicality of this scene, and the many many more like it, just doesn’t happen anymore. Giants of a lost art.
