A fire broke out at the coffeeshop at Block 407 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 at around 2:40am today. I visited the site this morning, and spoke to the owner, and some of the affected residents who lived above the coffeeshop. The coffeeshop was badly damaged, but thankfully no one was seriously injured. Luckily, the fire was put out quickly by the SCDF, and did not spread to the wet market and food centre next to it. Also luckily, the owner had fire insurance. This incident reminds us of the importance of having insurance too for our homes (even after the mandatory period), so that if we are caught in similar circumstances, we will still have some protection and help. And if you own a wet market or cooked food stall, please protect it, and yourself, with fire insurance too! My thanks to @myscdf and @singaporepoliceforce for putting out the fire and evacuating our residents safely, as well as the grassroots leaders, @singaporehdb and @amktowncouncil who are looking after the affected residents and business owners. – LHL

Went on a #jalanjalan at Marina Bay on Sunday, where @ilightsingapore is ongoing. Organised by @urasingapore, the 10th edition of this sustainable light festival features outdoor installations created by local and international artists. The artworks use energy-saving lighting fixtures and encourage visitors to adopt sustainable habits. Many of the installations are interactive and family-friendly, so make it a fun night out with friends or family during this mid-year school break. #iLightSingapore runs till 23 June. – LHL (Photos by me)

It’s Dragon Boat Festival today! This festival is associated with the story of the patriotic Chinese poet Qu Yuan, who threw himself into the Mi Luo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month when he learnt that his country had fallen to the enemy. It was said that villagers and fishermen tossed rice dumplings into the river to prevent the fishes from eating Qu Yuan’s body. Nowadays, we commemorate this traditional festival with thrilling dragon boat races and delicious rice dumplings. In Singapore, different dialect and cultural groups offer their own version of rice dumplings, reflecting our unique multiculturalism. There are also healthier choices with less sodium and fat. Do eat in moderation, and I hope you will enjoy the festivities today. 祝大家端午节快乐!– LHL (MCI Photo by Lim Sin Thai)
Happy Father’s Day! Today, we honour all the fathers, fathers-to-be, grandfathers, and father figures who care, support, and love us in their own ways. I’m glad that more dads are now active caregivers and spending time with their little ones at home. A father’s role is irreplaceable, especially in early childhood. Here’s to the dads who make us laugh, who pick us up when we fall, and who inspire us to strive for the best. To all fathers, I hope you get to spend time with your loved ones on this special day! ❤️ – LHL (MCI Photo by Chwee)
Enjoyed the wonderful closing gala concert by the @singaporechineseorchestra at The Esplanade last night! The event was jointly presented with @singaporechineseculturalcentre. The audience was serenaded with familiar xinyao (新谣) tunes composed by xinyao icon Dr Liang Wern Fook. The songs touched on many relatable themes – life events, youth, uncertainty, home, reconciliation, and self. Xinyao began as a musical and cultural movement in the 1980s. Many of the Mandarin songs were written by Singaporean youths of that era. It is an important facet of Singapore Chinese culture and our national identity, resonating with generations of Singaporeans. The SCO and the SCCC have also been instrumental in forging deeper understanding and appreciation of our unique Singapore Chinese culture, including uniquely local expressions like xinyao. Keep up the good work! – LHL (PMO Video by Koh Yong Sheng)
Delighted to break ground for the @foundersmemorialsg at Bay East Garden this morning! The Memorial will tell our Singapore Story, honouring the founding leaders of Singapore, including Mr Lee Kuan Yew and his core team, as well as other important leaders in the public, private and people sectors in our first two decades of nation building (1950s-1970s). Our pioneers overcame the odds to build a strong, united, and independent Singapore, established fundamental values and ideals that set the long-term direction of our nation, and brought Singapore from Third World to First. When ready in 2028, the Memorial will face the Marina Bay skyline and the metropolis beyond that is home to 3.5 million Singaporeans. Here Singaporeans can reflect on our ongoing nation-building journey and appreciate our precious inheritance from the founding generation, as we continue building a harmonious and successful Singapore as one united people, for generations to come. 🇸🇬– LHL (PMO Video by Jeline Chia and Koh Yong Sheng)
Deeply grateful to the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (@sg.sfcca) and Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (@sccci.official) for holding an appreciation dinner for me yesterday. The gathering reminded me of the dinner SFCCA and SCCCI organised when I became PM in 2004! In these 20 years, the Chinese community has worked closely with the government to build strong ties. We’ve developed sound mutual trust and gone through many challenges together. I have also seen how our Chinese community has evolved, kept up with the times, and progressed together with Singapore. It has helped businesses transform and expand abroad, and done much to integrate new immigrants into our society and enrich Singaporean Chinese culture. More importantly, the Chinese community has helped forge our unique national identity. Despite having a Chinese majority, Singapore culture isn’t completely built upon Chinese culture. Instead, our Chinese culture flourishes on the basis of multiculturalism, in a multiracial and multireligious society, where all citizens put Singapore and its interests first. I’m humbled and thankful for the support and good wishes from SFCCA and SCCCI through the years. Let us stay united and do our best to overcome all difficulties, and build a better Singapore together! – LHL (PMO Video by Koh Yong Sheng)
Selamat Hari Raya Aidiladha! Aidiladha, or Hari Raya Haji, marks the end of the haj pilgrimage. Being the fifth pillar of Islam, all able-bodied Muslims who can afford to do so are obliged to undertake the haj pilgrimage once in their lifetime. @maliki_osman is leading the Singapore haj pilgrimage this year. I wish him and all fellow pilgrims a meaningful and safe journey. For those commemorating the occasion at home, enjoy the time with your friends and family. – LHL (MCI Photo by Lim Sin Thai)
