Today’s podcast is about how planning for the day I’d lose my job was the best work l’ve ever done. I’m a visible person that lost a gig, yet there’s 80-120 people on every show I worked on who also aren’t working now. You’ll recognise us in the street, we are often wearing redundant production kit – like this Batch in Paradise spray jacket. If you’ve ever lost a job, or you’ve never thought about losing a job – you may get some value out of today’s show. Today I’m grateful for every member of every crew I worked with across 20 seasons of Batch and Mask. I learned everything from you. See you on the next one ❤️
The great @gusworland is my guest this week. A whopper of an episode with more men’s health takeaways than you can poke a stick at. Search Better Than Yesterday in your app or click the link. What’s your mental fitness routine?
I shared a story on today’s podcast about a moment in my life where I sailed right past some warning signs about my drinking, using, and ego. Hopefully it’s of use – whether you’re in the middle of it and perhaps you aren’t noticing what people are trying to communicate to you, or if you’re trying to communicate to someone who’s struggling and you can’t figure out why they don’t get it together. I’ve known @nahaste since 2000, and she’s been like a sister to me. I’d known her dog Pippet for almost as long (she is pictured here when Mel opened my first photographic exhibit at her gallery back in 2010) . The thing about humans is we choose companion animals that don’t live as long as we do. Alas, Pippet has gone to chase squeaky balls in the sky. She was my first oodle, super good for cuddles when I stayed in the spare room and a loyal companion to my dearest Mel. I am sad for you my dear friend. My hope is that everyone throws a ball to their doggo today in honour of that lovely pup. In a world of good girls, she was the best.
@audreygriffen and I used to lie in bed every night and read stories with G. It was absolutely wonderful to be all snuggly with those two, taking turns at reading the pages. Then one night when she was about 12 I asked “what book do you want to read with us tonight GG?” and she replied “I’m ok without a story tonight, thank you”. And that was it. We had not realised that the night before had been the last night we ever read stories to her. I was working with @stavb105 at the time and he told me “one day I will put down my 4yr old daughter after carrying her and I won’t have realised it’s the last time I ever got the chance to do that – so every time I do get the chance, I treat it like it’s the last time I do it”. It was Stav who got me onto the concept known as “The Last time”. When you consider the absolute possibility – even though that possibility may be very remote – that something you do today could be the last time you ever do it, that thing becomes ever more precious. Today’s episode expands on this, and if you’re willing – I even walk through a few of the more difficult things to consider. Not to be grim or morbid, but as a way to enjoy and even relish in the small moments that lined up end to end become this one short life we have. You only get one chance to kiss someone for the first time, and @lindamarigliano’s story of how that happened is one of the most romantic and dorky and delightful and heart-burstingly beautiful love stories I’ve heard in a long time. If you need the feeling of warmth and possibility and love and hope – give it a listen. It’s a soothing balm and useful to remember that yes, while some things in the world are quite shit right now – it’s not all of it, and it’s not everywhere. There’s love and joy and connection and babies and goofy love stories happening in the middle of all of it. This podcast left me floating on air all afternoon, I know it will do the same for you. For a bloke who messed up highschool and then dropped out of part time uni because it was too hard, I’ve really come to love learning. I try to learn in everything I put myself to. Even picking up the dog poop. Full episode in the link.
What happens when you meet anger with kindness? The great @nazeemhussain spent the afternoon with me and we covered all (well, a lot of) the uncomfortable topics, racism and online harrassment, just to name a few, when he switched up his approach around responding to negativity. The result was nothing short of incredible. Listen to the full episode by searching Better Than Yesterday where you get your podcasts or click the link in the stories.
Listening to @lindamarigliano talk about her first kiss the other day made me really miss that moment with @audreygriffen. In today’s podcast I talk about how there is a way to achieve a similar feeling of connecting and that rush of hormones, even with the person who’s been sleep-farting through the last decade of your life together. (Sorry honey, I told you I got all my protein from legumes and you still married me) Search Better Than Yesterday where you get your podcasts or click the link in stories.
An absolute thrill to have @smacmccreanor be our guest reporter on NTNNNNN last night. So funny. So delightful. After the gig I was reluctant to ask if we could do the chicken dance together yet she kindly obliged. Total boss. Enormous fun. What a joy. See her exhibit at @ngvmelbourne and see NTNNNNN tonight 9:30p. We must close Sunday!
Well, at least it was when we recorded this! Podcast out now. Search better than yesterday or click the link. @sylviajeffreys is an absolute legend. I know you’re gonna love this one.
Have you ever been faced with anger, meanness, (or just pure rage) – and met it with kindness? Off the back of this week’s pod with @nazeemhussain, I had a run-in with a cranky bloke in my neighbourhood and while I did ok – watching how someone else handled the same amount of cranky was a big lesson in what Naz was talking about. When performing at the @melbcomedyfestival, Osher chooses to travel @lugandcarrie, and listen to @fangz_music. @johndeeks speaking…
The most searched query about me? ‘Osher Gunsberg Feet’. No, not really. But here they are anyway, knock your socks off (see what I did there?) On today’s new episode I will be revealing the answer to one of the most googled questions about me. Search Better Than Yesterday where you get your podcasts or click the link in the stories.
Thanks @jaw_knees for the hot shot of @audreygriffen and I Yesterday on the @gentlemansride through Sydney. She held on like a champ even through the fun twisty bits on the @harleyaustralia Livewire. This morning we woke up sore. The sure sign of a fun ride! My fourth year riding and a sensational cause run by the best blokes you ever could meet (@markhawwa and @ramseysayed among others), and I’m proud to be an ambassador for such a solid crew, who over ten years have raised more than $50M for men’s health. You can still donate to support men’s mental health and prostate cancer research through the link in my stories x
This weekend, good luck with your To-Do List around the house. Have you tried writing a To Not Do List? It’s just as satisfying and helps get your To-Do List done better. (The “Fat Sabbath” idea doesn’t sound too bad though. Might pop that one back in rotation…) Search Better Than Yesterday where you get your podcasts or click the link in the stories.
This Sunday, 6 pm. @jeevesverma_ and I are putting together something new. Come and be a part of creating some television magic (by that I mean three Sony cameras some printouts and a dinger because we can’t afford to build a game show set just yet) Link in Stories! @improvtheatresydney
A moment from what is a glorious conversation with at @angiemcmahon – The whole chat is wall-to-wall with Gold, she is an extraordinarily talented singer songwriter, and as you can, hear, clearly very wise listen through the link, where you get your Podcasts search better than yesterday.
Recipe for a public holiday: Take four year old to museum. Touch rock that actually came from Outer space. Proceed to spend afternoon listening to the pure and curious brain of a preschooler contemplating the absolute vastness of time and space. Eat snacks. Head home. Put on “mothership connection” from P-Funk while cooking dinner. Dance. Eat. Bath. Bed. Perfection.
The news can be an avalanche of awful, so how does @sylviajeffreys manage being exposed to the unedited worst of it every day? This is such a great episode, heaps to learn about working in media, parenting and looking after yourself. Sylvia is top shelf, and not just because she’s from Brisbane. @jeevesverma_ had his last show of the run tonight (he has got work tomorrow) so we had a drink after and the team presented me with the special 50th birthday edition, hooded robe. Monogrammed with a network logo. Two shows left, I might even wear this on Stage tomorrow night.
When I did “live to dance” on CBS, I had the chance to work with the best of the best in the game when it comes to shiny floor, non scripted television. Directors, audio, execs – working in Australian TV had been like flying in a Cessna and suddenly I’m on the flight deck of an A380. My two producers taught me so much, @jamessunderlandtv (who worked on my favourite live show ever, Sat Night Takeaway), and the exquisite @dominicianthony – a firehose of a human from New Orleans, with deep music knowledge and a superpower for making emotive stories. This is Anthony’s wonderful gift for my 50th, which arrived in the post yesterday. Custom espresso cups he made himself. In a time of mass produced objects, to hold a thing in my hand which I will use every day which was crafted for me by someone I care about – what a bloody marvellous gift. Also, it has coffee in it. WIN! 🏆
