Our expert panellist on growth @osher_gunsberg recently got double-fired – from ‘The Bachelor Australia’ and ‘The Masked Singer’ – on the same day. It was news that once upon a time would have sent him into an emotional tailspin. This time, though, by learning how to reframe his reaction to bad news, Günsberg was able to find positives. How far have we come? Would what happened to @dokic_jelena and how her father was portrayed in the media, would that still happen today? We’d like to think not. This conversation with Jelena Dokic brought me to tears. By telling her story Jelena has proven that when we own our stories and share them with others, we not only help ourselves, but we help each other. We are never alone in our experiences and we can learn from our mistakes to make the future better for others. Jelena Dokic is the definition of resilience and in our conversation, Jelena shares the real and practical ways she worked through her trauma. And I hope it leaves you feeling inspired and empowered. Can you draw? How many goes would you give yourself before you gave me an answer? @theguiltyfeminist host, comedian and writer @dfdubz will blow your mind on the podcast this week. Deborah Frances-White has lived a remarkable life. She left the Jehovah’s Witness church in Brisbane to study at Oxford University. While in the UK she has created an improv company, has written books and is the founder of one of the biggest podcasts in the world. Deborah shared so many interesting insights on privilege versus access, how to jumpstart your creativity, what being our authentic selves really means and how improv can help us to trust our instincts. (Additionally, it turns out she and I learned improv at the same theatre in Brisbane (possibly even at the same time…)) Search Better Than Yesterday where you get your podcasts or click on the link in my stories
Resilience 🤝 Vulnerability. You can’t have one without the other. My conversation with @dokic_jelena this week made me think about the relationship between resilience and vulnerability. Hearing Jelena’s story and experiences, I was blown away by how incredibly resilient she is. And it all clicked in my brain. To bounce back, to overcome trauma and life’s hardships, we need vulnerability. And on the flip side, we need resilience to be vulnerable and connect with other people. The other night I thought “I should really jump on the rower tomorrow” Next morning morning, I got into my workout gear, came downstairs and thought “oh I’ll just shoot off that email before I do my 20 mins of intervals then I can shower and do the video call before I head to my 11am in town” Cut to me, sprinting back upstairs in my non-sweaty workout gear at 1040, because I got so carried away with everything but the thing I went to work on and now I’m so late I’m pulling my motorbike gear over the top of my training shorts to head to my meeting. I know there’s a better way to do these things. And it’s to do with knowing when I’m hot, knowing when I’m cold and then taking myself out of the decision. You quit didn’t you? The new thing you tried and weren’t immediately good at, you gave up and said, “I’m not good at that”. We’ve all done it. How many things in your life are you not doing right now, things that might bring you a lot of joy, because you are afraid people will laugh at you? I used to not try new things because I was afraid of people’s laughter, of people’s judgement and of my own for not being perfect straight away. Ultimately, we are the ones who lose out. So, let’s change this attitude we have. On today’s episode I talk about how we can stop being so hard on ourselves. When Nic Marchesi launched @orangeskyau with his best mate, the idea was to help restore dignity to people experiencing homelessness by providing a free laundry service. What they didn’t plan on is that while the people were having their clothes washed, there was a chance to have a chat and connect with those people, and at that moment they were providing something far more valuable than clean clothes. Nic is a brilliant human being and taught me a lot. As we go through the conversation you’ll hear he never refers to a ‘client’, they’re always ‘ one of our friends’ and then gives them a name. It’s a deliberate and beautifully humanising move that shifted for me how much we can ignore the person and instead focus on the problem especially when it comes to those who are sleeping rough. It’s a wonderful story, and I know you’re going to think very differently about people experiencing homelessness by the time we’re through. Saw Death of a Salesman last night. Absolutely astonishing. Get to Sydney, go and see it. @therealanthonylapaglia gave a devastating performance. I don’t think Audrey had any circulation left in her right hand I was squeezing it so hard. @salesmanaustralia @joshy_helman was absolutely incredible as Biff..
Change is the way of the universe. Yet so much of the pain I’ve faced in my life is caused by resisting it. It’s fair to say I’m not the person I was 10 years ago when I met my wife. The skin on my body isn’t even the same skin it was four weeks ago. The blood cells in my body have a lifespan of four months or so. The cells that make up the bones in my body were not there 10 years ago. They have been regenerated. They have been renewed. Tiny, itty bitty bits of my brain still exist from when I was born, along with a few cells in my heart. Everything else is just reconstituted bits of food that I’ve eaten over the last decade. So yeah, I am not the same accumulation of atoms and cells that cycled to work and met Audrey in a underground garage at a fancy house in Hunters Hill in Sydney ten years ago. Do you sometimes get stuck with how things have changed? Today’s podcast will hopefully offer a perspective that might help. This whole episode popped into my head listening to @flaminglips episode on @songexploder the other day. It’s been a ride that’s for sure. Search ‘Better Than Yesterday’ where you get your podcasts or hit the link in my stories. Sometimes I wonder if I am alone in thinking about stuff like this. Am I?
