Saimaallakin on jo kymmenen malminetsintävarausta ja kahdeksan malminetsintälupaa. Kaivoksen voi perustaa melkein minne tahansa, edes kansallispuisto ei ole este ja kaivostoiminnan väitetään tuovan työpaikkoja ja hyvinvointia. Mutta mietipä vaikka Saimaan aluetta: kuinka pian avolouhos korvaisi matkailun tai metsätalouden tulovirran. Taikka oman mökkirantasi? Metallimalmikaivosten jätteet, etenkin rikastushiekka ja sivukivi, aiheuttavat vakavan uhkan luonnolle. Rikastushiekka on ongelmajätettä, sillä se voi sisältää elohopeaa, syanidia, arseenia (josta muodostuu arsenikkia) ja kadmiumia, ja on erittäin vahingollista vesistöille.
