Respect has become an endangered value over the past few decades. But the Bible makes God’s expectations clear: “Show proper respect to everyone” (1 Peter 2:17 NIV). That’s right: Everyone, regardless of beliefs or behaviors, is worthy of respect. Why should you show respect to everyone? 1. God made everyone. Psalm 8:5 says, “You [God] made them inferior only to yourself; you crowned them with glory and honor” (GNT). God doesn’t make junk. No one is worthless. People make wrong decisions, but they are still valuable to God. Even the most unlovable person in the world is loved by God. 2. Jesus died for everyone. The Bible says, “God paid a ransom to save you . . . he paid for you with the precious lifeblood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18-19 TLB). You may not place much value in certain people, but God does. In fact, he says every person you meet is worth dying for. 3. It shows you know God. The Bible tells us that God is love. If you know God, you’ll fill your life with love. The Bible says, “If a person isn’t loving and kind, it shows that he doesn’t know God—for God is love” (1 John 4:8 TLB). Love always treats people with respect. 4. You’ll get back whatever you give out. It’s the law of the harvest; you reap what you sow. If you want to be respected, treat other people with respect. The Bible says, “A man’s harvest in life will depend entirely on what he sows” (Galatians 6:7 PHILLIPS). Give it a try. Showing respect to everyone may be hard at first, but as we learn to love each other, we become “eager to show respect for one another” (Romans 12:10 GNT).

Our “tough seasons” as parents of children (of any age) with mental illness are typically ongoing and compounding in their harmful effects to every member of our family. We can find ourselves in a near constant state of hypervigilance dealing regularly with severe issues that many will never encounter in a lifetime. How do we care for our own emotions as we continue to give our best to help our children navigate chronic and acute mental health challenges? This month, the BREATHE Conversations Call will feature a 90-minute in-depth conversation with Adam Young, LCSW, therapist, Allender Center Fellow, and host of The Place We Find Ourselves podcast. Adam will expertly and compassionately deepen our understanding of how our nervous systems were designed and how to respond to big emotions, both within ourselves and in our children. He will talk to us about how our design is connected to the need for kindness and help us with practices to strengthen our relationships with ourselves and our children. If you have a child of any age who struggles with their mental health, please join my wife, @kaywarren75 on Saturday, June 29, from 10:00-11:30 a.m. (PT) for a validating and hopeful conversation with Adam. Registration for this event is free at https://kaywarren.com/breathecalls. BREATHE is a safe and welcoming community for parents who have a child of any age with mental health challenges.
