Beauty is Ryuichi Sakamoto’s eighth solo album, initially released in 1989/1990, the first album on Virgin America worldwide.
The album was produced with many diverse guest musicians, including Brian Wilson (Beach Boys), Robbie Robertson (The Band), Robert Wyatt (Soft Machine), Youssou N’Dour, Arto Lindsay, etc.
Beauty is notable for its “collage of styles” that range from rock, techno, and classical to African; about half of the songs on the album are cover songs, including two Okinawan folk songs, the Rolling Stones’ “We Love You,” Foster’s “Romance,” and today’s dig, Samuel Barber’s “Adagio.”
Before the term “Globalization” came into general use, Sakamoto proposed the term “Outer-National” as a counter-concept to “Inter-National” for the album motif. The work evokes an image of a new individual, a new way of being, where individuals connect beyond nations and nationalities. Sakamoto further explains that in this world, each individual will travel the world as a “merchant.”
