SKMT | dig In August 1986, Ryuichi had three short weeks at The Wool Hall Studio in England to write and produce Virginia Astley’s album, “Hope In A Darkened Heart.” Ryuichi performed and recorded the base instrumentals for six tracks on the album. The backing track for ‘Some Small Hope’ was sequenced on the Fairlight 3, the synth pad from the Prophet 5, and the ‘woodwind’ (shakuhachi flute) sections originating from the Emulator II. https://www.commmons.com/ commmons from now on commmons is a music label started by Ryuichi Sakamoto in 2006 primarily for activities in Japan, in collaboration with Avex, and with the goal of creating a “commons for music.” Its aims included being a structure where Sakamoto can create music freely, being a tool to release music made by individuals, and providing resources to others. Though we did not accomplish our goals to the extent that we had hoped, we do believe that commmons has come to be regarded as Ryuichi Sakamoto’s homebase in Japan. And now, about the future. With Sakamoto departed from this world, what is it that we can do? To care for, preserve, and share the works that Sakamoto left behind. To learn about his thoughts on music from his words and to create opportunities for new music to be born. Those are some of the things on our minds as we plan, with renewed feelings, to take the next steps alongside Sakamoto’s spirit. As an expression of this commitment, we have created a new logo. “There is m (music) inside the commons.” We hope that you will continue to look out for us. https://www.commmons.com/ #commmons #坂本龍一 #ryuichisakamoto #skmtnews

SKMT | dig “DAWN” from “Comica” (2002) From the launch of Miraikan (The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation) in 2001 until 2013, Ryuichi Sakamoto’s music played in a corridor called the oval bridge surrounding Geo Cosmos (a sphere in the museum that projects a realistic vision of Earth, expressed in a digital format). Ryuichi created installation music in four parts: DAWN, DAY, SUNSET, and NIGHT. The music was innovative in that it was generated in real-time by meteorological data such as temperature, sunshine, wind speed, and solar radiation measured at Miraikan. The museum’s first director, Mamoru Mohri, also known as the first Japanese astronaut, had a close relationship with Sakamoto in many ways, including conducting an experiment to listen to Sakamoto’s music selected by Mohri in space during his second space flight. The album Comica (2002) contains recordings of Ryuichi’s generative installation music and additional works from 2001. SKMT | dig 🌕 “A Carved Stone” from “Esperanto” (1985) Composed for a performance by New York avant-garde choreographer Molissa Fenley. Produced and performed by Sakamoto with contributions from Arto Lindsay and Japanese percussionist Yas-Kaz, “Esperanto” is a fascinating instrumental work. Listen to “A Carved Stone” via link in bio 🔗 “Musically, Sakamoto used a lot of sampling. There is a wide variety of music to choose from, but unlike what is known as hip-hop, the technique aims to be ‘ethno,’ even if it is techno. The concept of “Esperanto” has a strong element of ethnic musical primitivism. The single that came out earlier also uses the same music and is more pop-like. “High-tech ethno-music”” that takes into account Debussy’s and Stravinsky’s ballet music, Satie’s theatre music and other lineages” -(Excerpt from an album review in Steady Magazine’s October issue.) Ryuichi often expressed, “I sometimes regret not pursuing the path I opened with Esperanto. If I had, I could’ve been a more interesting artist.” #skmtnews #ryuichisakamoto #坂本龍一 #SKMTDIG #esperanto @molissafenley

SKMT | dig The title “Esperanto” refers to an artificial language invented by Ludovico Zamenhof. The album’s overall composition reflects Sakamoto’s comment that it is “imaginary ethnic music.” The album incorporates so-called techno music techniques, such as introducing Fairlight CMI and sampling sources into ethnic music, aiming for a new musical structure that is not pop. The many pauses and quiet sounds that appear in the work are intended to represent the rustling of dancers’ clothes and the sound of the floor.
