These days I don’t do tv news unless I feel I have something important to say #protest #freespeech #Gaza #usc
Deeply ironic to me that so many universities’ responses to these student protests seem profoundly uneducated Educate yourself by reading. One book I recommend Student resistance: a history of the unruly subject By Mark Edelman Boren My takeaways: 1. As long as there have been students; there have been student protests 2. Our media’s obsession with centres of formal political power makes it ill-equipped to understand or analyse protests like this, hence the allegation they are anarchic displays of pointless disruption. They are anything but 3. The decision to meet peaceful protest with violence – eg inviting riot police onto campus – tends to be what rallies wider public opinion in favour of the protesters. So self defeating even by its own standards 4. There is no justification for educational institutions not being transparent about their financial dealings. And divestment works #Student #Protests #Resistance #Gaza #Ceasefire #divest #freespeech #USC
Why do we remove our body hair, and who decided we should do this? Prepare to be enlightened. Rounding off this miniseries on Bodies, we bring you the hugely in demand journalist and bestselling author @afuahirsch. Afua Hirsch is at the forefront of discussions about race, history, and culture in Britain today. Her latest book ‘Decolonising My Body: A Radical Exploration Of Rituals And Beauty’, was a revelation for me. It made me question the beauty standards I had always taken for granted, and it was so informative on non-western cultural perspectives on body, asking questions like: Why do Western cultures think body hair is bad? How do non-Western cultures treat puberty and aging? Can we change how we view our bodies from learning how our ancestors did it? In this episode, as well as covering different cultural views on bodies, Afua talks through her view of her body as a young black girl and how that has changed, a life altering moment with Oprah, and why she personally wanted to unlearn and then relearn everything when it came to understanding her body. Students reminding us once again what our values are supposed to be proud of my journalism student @mdzain5625 @annenbergmedia for his professionalism, politeness, and perseverance in getting answers from USC President Carol Folt As faculty, the decision to strip the valedictorian of her platform, then invite the LAPD onto campus when students protested that, was not in our name As journalists, holding people accountable is what we do It should not be this hard @annenbergmedia #protest #freespeech #Gaza #USC

Only two weeks to go until our EDI roundtable & Six Stages conference! See updated agenda and link to book below, with bios of all our amazing speakers and panellists. I’m going to be in conversation with @afuahirsch (award winning writer, journalist, social commentator, former barrister and filmmmaker). To keep you on your toes for our conversation to come, here’s a teaser throwing it back a few months to when Afua and I were invited onto @andioliver and @miquitaoliver incredible podcast (‘Stirring It Up’) where we chatted and laughed hard over an incredible meal Andi cheffed up in their family home. I love this clip of Afua describing the challenges of juggling being a working mother in a demanding (and at times life threatening) role, identity as a Black African mixed race woman and structural racism within the media that drives what and how she writes about as a journalist. Comment below if you have any questions about Afua’s perspective on social justice or how we can make society more inclusive you’d like me to put to her. We will give a free ticket to the event to our favourite two questions suggested below. 📍 Location: St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, WC2N 4JJ, London When: Friday 28 June 2024 Learn More: Full Agenda, Details and to book your place below 🔗 Click here to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eYe9udt2

‘I don’t write to be a politician. I could have been a politician if I wanted to, but I chose to be someone who was mining my own questions about society, so I could make sense of myself,’ @jeremyoharris tells @afuahirsch in this week’s issue of ES Magazine. There is no doubt Harris’s hit show, Slave Play, which opens in London shortly, mines those questions. The play, which garnered a then-recordbreaking 12 Tony nominations during its run on Broadway, explores race, power and attraction in interracial relationships, in the charged setting of a slave plantation of the antebellum South. It has also ensured politics is never far away. Harris’s decision to hold ‘Black Out’ nights in London, encouraging all-Black audiences, prompted Rishi Sunak’s spokesperson to issue a statement decrying the move as ‘wrong and divisive’.
