Akilah Hughes Instagram – I’ve read so many tributes to @michaellatt over the past week, while I’ve tried to make sense of his untimely passing due to unspeakable and senseless violence. There are so many pictures to choose from at events he threw honoring creative people of color. I met him on MLK Day 2018 in Harlem. I was speaking with other attendees about my time at Sundance, and he asked me how I felt about Michelle Satter. I gushed about how much of a bad ass she was, how she helped me get over being green in the entertainment industry and how lucky I felt to get to work with her. He revealed that Michelle was his mother. I’ll always remember the pride he felt about that. When I first moved to LA he took me to dinner and introduced me to his upstairs neighbors who were having a housewarming that night. We laughed, and drank, and played the longest game of UNO in history. This is where my thoughts take me. Plenty of other people can speak about the incredible opportunities you created for artists, for the communities you forged and facilitated, but when I remember Michael, it’s as a friend who was so present, so welcoming, and always pushing to make himself and others better.
