Congratulations to Guggenheim Museo Bilbao on her 25th anniversary and to our esteemed founding director Juan Ignacio Vidarte! The visionary museum has changed our ideas of what museum architecture can be, how artists can respond to swirling spaces, outdoor environments and an urban plaza, and how bold museum leadership can defy and outlast entrenched cultural parochialism. Here, Fujiko Nakaya’s Fog, Jeff Koons’s Tulips, and Anish Kapoor’s totem of reflective spheres play in tandem with Frank Gehry’s exuberant architecture. Viva Bilbao! @guggenheimbilbao @guggenheim @jeffkoons @anish.kapoor #fujikonakaya #25thanniversary #genius #bilbao
In Seoul, where the smart art world has convened to celebrate what we always knew: Seoul is vital. Here, at Leeum Art Museum’s collection rehang, Anika Yi’s organisms suspend before Anish Kapoor’s mirrored arcs with Lee Seung Jio’s massive canvas in the back. Thank you to the Guggenheim’s many friends for welcoming us back home. #frieze #friezeseoul #seoul #leeum #artsonjecenter @yanghaegue @rirkrittiravanija korakritkrit #kimsoojastudio
In Venice, celebrating the launch of Nico Muhly’s To the Body with Guggenheim President Wendy Fischer and Asian Art Circle Co-Chair Gay-Young Cho along with our CEO and Director Mariet Westermann and Chief Curator Naomi Beckwith, and many Guggenheim friends and supporters. The collaboration with Yu Hong has been a dream and Nico’s music extends the experiential dimension of the show to achieve an ethereal yet acute sublime. Congratulations to the artists and thank you to all who made this project possible! @guggenheim @guggenheim_venice @lisson_gallery #venicebiennale2024 #yuhong @nicomuhly #nicomuhly

Congratulations to my amazing @robertrosenkranz for spearheading a tough collection of Time Based Media art, guided by the brilliant Chrissie Iles. The Aspen Art Museum has opened “Mountain / Time,” drawn from The Whitney and Robert’s collection, which probes with poetry and compassion the fierce realities of our time. This show is a gesture of and for the community, collaboration and diversity. #mustsee Clip 1 Doug Aitken, “Migration (Empire),” 2008 Clip 2 Korakrit Arunanondchai, “Songs for Dying,” 2021 Clip 3 Kahlil Joseph, “BLK NWS ®,” 2019 #AspenArtMuseum#VideoArt#TimeBasedMedia#ArtOfTheDay#Migration#Storytelling#ReMapping#DougAitken#KorakritArunanondchai#KahlilJoseph#KandisWilliams#ArthurJafa#Tourmaline#AnickaYi#IanCheng#MaiaRuthLee#ClarissaTossin#MarkLeckey#AlanMichelson#NicolaLees@ChrissieIsles @aspenartmuseum @whitneymuseum @dougaitkenworkshop @kritbangkok @chrrrissie

In Sonoma, joyous wedding of Liu Wa and Yang Bao! I have known her since her teens and guided her way to Yale and MIT, where she has thrived as a new media artist, performer, writer, and thinker. She now collaborates with her groom, the virtuoso classical pianist and composer, as a duo. Watch out, world! A magical day of festivity, feasting and friendship. 恭喜❤️🎉💫🥂 @wa.liu @yangbao__ @liuxiaodongstudio @yuhongstudio #love #donumestate #beautiful
In Arles at Lee Ufan’s Foundation, which he just opened in a large 18th century Provencal house, renovated by Tadao Ando. Lee has installed a lifetime of minimalist sculptures, paintings and drawings in this chalky light, a resonant harmony whose beauty brought me to tears. #arles @lee_ufan_arles #leeufan #tadaoando #LUMA #tadaoando @tadao_ando_architecture #provence

How to express my admiration and gratitude to Richard Armstrong? He has been a champion of the Guggenheim’s Asian Art Initiative, the Robert H N Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative (its launch in 2014 pictured here), and the Global Arts programme which have all shaped the last 14 years of intellectual and curatorial vision for the future Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. We have travelled the world together, and his curiosity and gift of instant camaraderie have vitalized our bold projects and assured their success and support across the museum world. The Guggenheim has become a truly international place because of his inspired leadership, and he has lead with grace at every turn. We look forward to a smooth transition over the next spring. Thank you, Richard. #guggenheim @guggenheim @guggenheim_venice @guggenheimbilbao #richardarmstrong #richardarmstrongdirector
Jenny Holzer at the Guggenheim! Congratulations to my amazing colleagues and to Jenny – we thank you for your lathe-like brilliance. #guggenheim #jennyholzer
In Rome, I was thrilled to speak on Daido Moriyama and postwar Japanese photography at MAXXI with Hou Hanru and Elena Motisi. Their show captures the infinity, speed, eroticism, and sadness of Daido’s voracious documentation of Tokyo in the throes of change over decades of postwar urbanization, and its cultural toll. Bravo to Daido, bravo to MAXXI! I organized his first show in a U.S. museum in 1998! Forever fascinated #MAXXI #daidomoriyama #rome

On this Mother’s Day, I celebrate our family’s recent publication of this book on our mother, Enid Munroe. Artist, writer, gardener, photographer, and traveller of the world, this book presents a selection of works spanning her 60-year career as a painter of portraits, still lifes, and landscapes and as a collage and assemblage artist. My sisters and I wrote the introduction, “She Taught Us How to See Beyond Looking.” By coincidence with my Guggenheim path, our mother was friends with Greens Farms neighbor Hilla Rebay, who gave Enid her own easel, seen here on the frontis page. We learned everything worth knowing from our mother – the value of art, culture, history, friendship, conversation, and love. Book design by @mikomcginty. Published by Montechiaro Press. Printed by Trifolio, Milan. With thanks to @mmrahe and Taleen Setrakian.
In Aspen, Korakrit Arunanondchai gave a performance in the mountains, summoning ghosts and spirits and wars and miracles, and light. A magical night in celebration of Aspen Art Museum, where Krit is one of the artists in the current video art show featuring works from Robert’s collection.
This Thursday June 6 at 5pm in Venice! World Premiere of To the Body, an immersive soundscape by Nico Muhly in response to Yu Hong’s installation at Chiesetta della Misericordia in Cannaregio. Today, in America, women’s rights and social progress have been dealt a death blow. The unthinkable has happened. A woman seeking to live her life as a free person is now criminalized for choice, even under circumstances of rape and incest. Back to coat hangers. We are in a state of war. I feel my sovereign body invaded, brutalized, run over for the gain of vile political fever. At Tate, Lubiana Himid takes on a new urgency.
