@secretlifenovel follows Hollywood actress Roxanne as she faces both coming to terms with her sex and love addiction, the addiction itself and setting herself on the path to recovery.
Although the story is told through the eyes of the fictional Roxanne, you can tell these experiences are coming from a place of truth and are Davisβ own experiences of dealing with this addiction.
I myself have never really known much about it and I think a lot of the time some people just see it as a label for people who like to have a lot of sex but thatβs really not the case; itβs an actual illness.
Each chapter follows one of the 10 rules Roxanne follows in order to battle her addiction and I really liked this order. It keeps the story flowing and allows the reader to go on a journey with Roxanne.
At first I struggled with the other characters having nicknames rather than actual names, for example NYC or Superstar (Davis does this to allow them to remain anonymous which is totally fair), but once I got used to it it actually added a nice little quirk to the text not knowing who the actual person was. Throughout the chapters, snippets of screenplays are also used to show Roxanneβs inner thoughts and they break up the text nicely; sometimes by adding humour to the chapter and at others emphasising the seriousness of the point being made.
Overall, I did really enjoy this read. It deals with a tough subject but written in a way that is very easy to read and allows you to understand and sympathise with the characterβs situation. If this is a topic you are interested in learning more about then I recommend giving this book a read.
