Cara Jade Myers Instagram – Natives go through this so much. We always hear “That was in the past, get over it.” Or “That was my ancestors not me.” Or my favorite “We won, you lost. You deserve what you got & get over it.”
Oh- and there’s “I’m not giving up my (land, home, freedoms, beliefs) to apologize for something I didn’t do.”
That’s why this clip really struck a cord with me.

“No one is asking you to apologize for what your ancestors did. We’re asking you to dismantle the systems they put in place that you still benefit from.” @regejean

A lot of people didn’t/ won’t watch Killers of the Flower Moon because they don’t want to see what was done to us. They want to ignore the past and write their own history/ not challenge what they’ve been told. To leave our past hidden because it doesn’t make them feel good.
But if we don’t take an honest look at our history, how are we going to learn from it and do better?

This weekend at the market- my aunt @dinahuntinghorse was proudly telling her customers that I was in KOTFM. And so many people replied (to my face) that it was just “too depressing to watch KOTFM and they don’t want to see the horrible things that happened”. As if by ignoring it, that makes it like it never happened.

I understand it is a very difficult movie to watch, movies that challenge our history books will disrupt the status quo. And that makes people uncomfortable.
If you truly cannot watch the violence, then read the book.
At least do a google search and SEE the victims as people who truly did nothing wrong but stumble on to wealth.
Understand that outsiders saw an entire group of people who were undeserving, and less than, then decided to make the victims fall in LOVE with them only to murder them for the money they never asked for.

I’ll get off my soapbox. My point is – history is usually one sided, learn the other side.
