here’s a raw little bit of what we were workin’ on last week. @elisabethhowerofficial just had me lengthen my stirrups again — that makes 5 holes longer than when I showed up. 🥵 I didn’t realize how short they actually were and how much it was negatively impacting my riding. I definitely come from the school of hard knocks and there’s a ton I don’t know. I’m over here doin’ my best with my big 4 legged partner, and learning as much as I can along the way. I know I’m going to feel unstable with all the change but I also know I’m forming new connections that are going to shift everything for the better. Rem has been having a hard time relaxing in the front ring so to help him out we dialed it back today and worked on our communication. Elisabeth had us start with free lunging and once we were connected there I got on and we finished up with a little bit of work in the saddle. We worked on not using hand and staying super soft through his transitions — round pen work is not easy for big long boys and he crushed it. I am really beginning to feel our communication and partnership entering a new level and I couldn’t be more proud of us. This partner of mine is just incredible — really. He’s so kind, capable, and willing. I’m very very excited for him. Change seems to be the theme of my life lately — returning to basics and finding balance through it all with the help of these animals has been a great gift. They remind me that presence, patience, and faith in one’s self are key to shifting one’s experience. Rem and I are learning how to stay soft and consistent in our connection and the results have been incredibly rewarding.

I’m grateful my horses are learning so much. It’s easy to be tempted to feel like I have experienced setback after setback but the truth is it’s all been leading me to the kind of horse woman I’ve always wanted to be. Sometimes change is truly the most daunting thing one can imagine but without it how do we ever scale our dreams? I’m grateful for every person that has helped me get to where I am today. The people that we spend our lives with form so much of our experience. I know I have a lot to learn here from the team at @winplacehome. Their approach with horses is inspirational and admirable. The reality of working with young ottbs. How this session started versus how it ended was really incredible to watch. Instead of giving up on Sequoia because she was having a spicy day, @elisabethhowerofficial took the time to meet her where she was at and remind her that she is in a safe place where she can exhale and work alongside us. Horses are prey animals — when a horse is in fight or flight her ability to focus is at a zero. There were many factors adding to Sequoia’s spice, but Elisabeth brought her back to us and was able to end this session on a soft and consensual note. Rem and I are learning and it is not perfect — he’s dropping behind the vertical, I’m not entirely balanced and stable in the saddle… the list goes on. It has not all come together for us yet but you can see it becoming and that’s so dope to me. Learning can be extremely frustrating and disheartening but my goal when I’m with these animals is to maintain my faith in myself and allow myself to be imperfect, kind, and patient. Learning is not linear and the more I can let go of the notion of “should be” the more I enjoy the process. Hats off to Remington for being open to the process and for being one of my greatest teachers. 🤍
Remington 🥹🤍 This trot would not have been possible for us one year ago. It’s really rad to see him learning true self carriage. He’s such a capable and athletic dude — and while jumping big is exhilarating, our foundation wasn’t there. Damn near every ride I struggled to get him in front of my leg, and on the days that he was in front of my leg it was because he was spicy. A spicy Remington is a hell of a lot of fun to ride, but that impulsion was not in response to my aids. We did not have a true understanding of connection. Just because fences go up does not mean true progress is being made. Little bean 🤎 Any moment spent with these beautiful beings is a damn good time. Who knows if Sequoia will ever become a ridden/working horse, that genuinely doesn’t matter to me. We’re still working through some physical and emotional limitations and ultimately she’ll tell me what she wants and is ready to do. There is something really special about forging a relationship with a horse with zero expectations/pressure on their “performance.” These little moments with her are all I’ll ever need from her.
