Drumroll please!! 🥁 I’ve written a book! NO PLACE LIKE HOME will be published by @dialoguebooks on September 5 2024. After what seems like an eternity of thinking about it, I’ve finally taken the leap, put pen to paper, and immersed myself in the beauty that is continuing to tell other peoples’ stories, but through writing. The idea of ‘home’ is a personal one, and it can be impacted by so many different factors. From food, to phrases, places, to smells, to feelings we struggle to find the words for – I’m genuinely fascinated by the different versions of we call ‘home’, and so I decided to write about it. I’ve spoken to lots of brilliant people, and I’m very grateful to be able to share their stories – and so alongside my experience as a Jamaican Londoner, and the experience of my parents and grandparents building a life here in London, there are stories of growing up in care, of fleeing wartorn Ukraine, of finding community through food, and more. I also discuss moments in history, and how our sense of home is shaped socially and culturally. It’s a book that means a lot to me and I’m very proud of, and I can’t wait for you to read it. NO PLACE LIKE HOME is available to pre-order now! Details are in the link in my bio.
Take a moment today to remember the 72 lives lost on this day seven years ago at Grenfell Tower. And also remember that, seven years on, their families and the survivors are still fighting for some semblance of justice. And remember those who, seven years on, are *still* fighting for the basic right of safe and secure homes for their families.

36hrs of the sis @_carinawh in London and an airport run. “I love you Aunty. I’ve missed you”, said Florence. Cue tears at Heathrow to accompany another goodbye 😢

My long time bezzie @djoptic has incurable sarcoma cancer, and on Saturday night the girlies supported his wife (and my friend obvs) @mrsamymcdonald at the @sarcoma_uk charity ball. It’s our 2nd year going. Last year we were so overblown by the beautiful community the charity has created we had to all go again this year, and I volunteered my services as host. Hosting meant keeping it together when on the mic, but in the interim trying not to completely fall apart crying as it was a constant reminder of what Darrell, Amy and the kids live with everyday – and the rollercoaster they and us have been through since he was first diagnosed in 2020. Cancer sucks. I mean, like, really really sucks. But the joy in that room on Saturday night was electrifying, despite the cloud of cancer floating high up in that room, and its footprints sitting on the hearts of all of us. But we danced, we sang, we ate. We laughed, we cried, and cried again. Thank-you to the Sarcoma community for welcoming us into your family. As we continue to navigate life with our friends living with it as a constant companion. Check out @sarcoma_uk … their work is phenomenal. And my friend Darrell has written a book about living with Sarcoma cancer, called “Straight Red”. It’s only £4.99 on Amazon and all proceeds go to Sarcoma UK. And I know I’m biased, but it’s brilliant.

I love a holiday without my children, writes Charlene White. “I mean, I love my children, that’s a given. I love spending time with them, that’s also a given. And I love going on holiday with them, that too is a given (well, most of the time – no one enjoys their kid having an epic meltdown on a beach. It’s the polar opposite of joyful). But I also like time away from them, be that a night away with friends or a mini break. “With the relentless hamster wheel of working full-time, parenting, sorting the house, shopping, sports clubs, cooking, joining the PTA (volunteering is important, no matter how busy you are), daily 6am alarms and more, sometimes you just need a moment to breathe and do nothing. And not feel guilty for doing so. It’s amazing what happens when you hit pause. But as parents, we can’t always recognise when we need to.” ⬆️ Continue reading @charlenewhite’s column at the link in @theipaper’s bio. There, White explains why children deserve parents who understand when it’s time for them to take a break.
