This came out the day after Grenfell which is why I didn’t post about it at the time, I wish more than anything khadija was here to celebrate these moments in my career with, it hurts not having a best friend to celebrate my success with but the fact my sister will never get to experience all the success that was coming her way hurts more. The last time we met up before she was killed was the best meet up we’d ever had in our 20 years of friendship, we were both starting to make it and were so excited telling eachother our big news, I’d just shot my first magazine cover for the Sunday Times magazine and she’d just sold all her work at the Venice biennale. We were two working class council estate kids who had beaten all the odds and were on the road to stardom, our ticket off our estates, our ticket to happiness, and she was killed just 2 weeks later. She had beaten all the odds life put in front of her as a black working class woman, only to be killed by our Tory government for being black and working class before she got to experience the success she had worked her whole life for. I PROMISE to use my success as my career goes mainstream to do all I can to honour her and get her justice. I love you forever khadija I wish you were here to celebrate with tonight.
