When you’re stuck on the roof of your motel that “never floods” & you need to get to your chopper to save people. The incredible story of the rescuers who needed rescuing tonight @theprojecttv
Every time I have the honour of emceeing the @nswpolicelegacy #blueribbonball I meet incredible people like Senior Constable Margaret Richardson. Margie lost her husband Sergeant Geoffrey Richardson as he tried to assist colleagues apprehending a criminal. She says telling their seven year old son that his Daddy was never coming home is the hardest thing she’s ever had to do. His five month old brother was too young to understand. You could’ve heard a pin drop as Margie told 800 people her story & what happened when NSW Police Legacy stepped in to help. Thank you to everyone who donated or bought a table or sponsored tonight’s fundraiser, the first in two years (thanks Covid 🙄) And thanks to Margie for making people rip open their wallets 🙌🏻 then dance & sing & mingle to tunes from the actually live on stage, awesome @nswpolice band featuring the magnificent Belinda Parsons on vocals.

John & Annabelle bought the Lakeside Lodge Motel @lakeside_lodge_lismore (“that never floods”) in Nov 2020 & moved north to Lismore from Torquay. They persevered through the tourism shock of bushfires & a pandemic that was never part of their business plan, then found themselves trapped on the motel’s rooftop with 24 of their guests, as floodwaters rose around them #swipeleft See #linkinbio They spent a terrifying six hours with a birdseye view of the rising water, until strangers in tinnies arrived & rescued all of their guests. They were the last ones off the roof (thanks to a dude they only know as “Dylan from Lennox Head”) I met them last Thursday when they arrived back in clothes that someone gave them at the pub when they turned up soaking wet once Dylan dropped them to safety (Annabelle reckons it’s the only chance she’ll ever have to rock a PhoKing t-shirt). Alone, they started the long clean up. Mud everywhere, they dragged sodden carpet, mattresses, TV’s & fridges from rooms, somehow with a warm, dry sense of humour, resigned to what they needed to do to get their business up & running asap because “Lismore’s gonna need accomodation & we need to get some money through the door.” While we were there filming for @theprojecttv John got a call from @bookingcom hassling for their booking fees. John told them “mate we’ve just been smashed by a flood, I don’t think that’s appropriate right now”. I spoke to John yesterday. They’ve called three times since. Seriously @bookingcom it’s time for a multinational like you to do your bit & waive booking fees for tourism operators like John & Annabelle. They don’t want charity, but they could do with a break. They’ve slaved for a week to clean out their motel, knowing that whoever helps repair their region will need somewhere to stay. And to give you an idea of the some of challenges they face, no matter how hard they work, it’ll be weeks before they can get electricity in their rooms (every power point has to be checked by Council), the rubbish they’ve dragged out remains dishearteningly on their doorstep because there’s simply so much of it to remove in Lismore. So hey @bookingcom why not throw them a bone?

The kindness of strangers. Ron & his son Deegan lost track of how many people they saved in their tinny this week, even as their own house went under. Such a privilege to meet them and you will too, tonight @theprojecttv 🙌🏻🙌🏻 #nswfloods #lismore
Day 3 Highlights Reel – Three Capes Track with hiking buddies, the ultimate tour boss @abolgie & her consort Charlie. Btw Jimmy’s boots are holding up nicely. ❤️ #tasmania ❤️#tasmannationalpark ❤️#threecapestrack

Not. Happy. Jan. #thecollarofshame #birdnerdsrusfarm Interfering with the resident tough guy’s mojo to help a healing paw.

#latergram #soundon 🔊 Epic final day of the Three Capes Track – unexpectedly the longest of the trip (should really read the fine print) – through ancient tree ferns & glorious cloud forest, then along cliff tops & coastal heath, past an impossibly calm southern ocean on a blue sky almost windless day. The optional “undulating” two hour trek to Cape Hauy was worth the still aching calf muscles. Huge thanks to @abolgie for embracing her second ever hike with a vengeance & for organising another truly wonderful Tassie adventure, along with whatever she said to the weather gods who more than smiled upon us 🙏🏻 So much more of Tassie yet to see. We’ll be back….boots and all. #tasmania ❤️ #threecapestrack 👌🏻

1032 birds to find in Ecuador. Could I be up for Mother of the Year?
Very happy to announce I’m a director of a new not-for-profit Australian charity called Global Wildlife Fund. We’re investing in gold standard conservation projects that are not only protecting and restoring wildlife populations and habitats, but also have strong local community engagement, with social and educational impact. We’re investing in projects from the savannas and rainforests of Africa, the Andes/Amazon region in South America and biodiversity hotspots in Asia and the Pacific. All donations are tax deductible – the link’s in my bio ⬆️ Our first project is to help rebuild the population of the magnificent Sable Antelope #swipeleft👈 We are supporting African Parks and the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, with the first translocations scheduled later this year. . . . . . . . #wildlife
For those of you kind enough to inquire about Jimmy’s 2022 hiking boot experience & attitude to the role of footwear when walking for many days far from civilisation (due to his 2021 “Yes I checked my boots dear” bungle)….. here’s a recap & an update for you from the 2022 Tassie wilderness adventure
