So excited to share my latest book I’ve illustrated written by @bethferry1. I had so much fun learning about the world of strange plants through a quirky story about a little girl who slowly finds her people by trepidatiously sharing her fascinations with those around her. Available for preorder through my link in bio! Check out @pwpics starred review : Like her parents, young Prunella is a gifted gardener, but the child’s botanical tastes are a world apart. Born with a purple thumb, she favors fungi over ferns, cultivates a patch of poison ivy, and loves anything “strange and curious,” including “bladderworts, porcupine tomatoes, and corpse flowers.” Prunella loves her odd garden, and her somewhat puzzled parents nevertheless fuel her passion, but her interests leave neighborhood peers “not only nervous but nauseated”; it all leads to isolation that finds Prunella perceived as “persnickety” and “prickly.” Then one day, a boy walks into her garden, asks genuinely interested questions, and introduces Prunella to an entire community of passionate kid botanists (plus a mycologist and one junior entomologist), who clamor for her wisdom and enthusiasm. As Prunella’s defenses melt, she feels a “tiny seed inside” that “sprouted and stretched and soared.” Alliterative prose by Ferry (The Christmassy Cactus) and digital artwork by Keane (Make Way), rendered in luxuriant, jewel-toned colors and balletic, inky lines, prove as lovely as a warted puffball as they chronicle Prunella’s journey from isolation to connection—the protagonist’s sense of relief at finally finding her people is palpable and deeply reassuring. A glossary provides additional information about mentioned species. Ages 4–8. Author’s agent: Elena Giovinazzo, Pippin Properties. Illustrator’s agent: Steven Malk, Writers House. (July)

Yesterday I visited my friend @louisthomas___ at his beautiful loft in Montmartre. His work is full of aesthetic charm and his process is the kind that requires the greatest of skills, simplicity. When you swipe through you will see some of his book Le Livre de Tout that he made directly in a sketchbook without any pre sketching or post photoshop touch ups. (The second picture is of the printed book on the left and the original sketchbook on the right 😵😵) He also works this way for his large commission portraits which are done in person within a few hours only and directly on the canvas without a sketch. As someone who is constantly changing her mind about composition or redrawing my sketches over and over, throwing things out until the last minute, I am blown away by the amount of mastery and discipline this way of working takes. What a wonderful and inspiring afternoon. . #watercolorsketch #watercolorsketching #watercolorpainting #watercolorartwork #watercolorjournal #watercolorandink #onesketchaday #sketchoftheday #drawingfromobservation #observationaldrawing #drawingfromlife #lifedrawing #draweveryday #sketch #sketchbook #illustratorsofinstagram #illustratorsoninstagram #drawingfromobservation #drawyourday #louisthomas #illustratedjournal #sketchjournal #lineandwash #penandwatercolor #sacrecoeur #parisfrance #portraitartist #illustrator #illustration #animationart #visualdevelopmentartist

Trying to capture the movement of ocean waves in line drawing will always be a welcome challenge: the smooth part of the water leading into the frothy white part crashing on the sand and then the patterns in the water that recedes- it’s impossible to capture and yet so fun to try 🌊 #watercolorsketch #watercolorsketching #watercolorpainting #watercolorartwork #watercolorjournal #watercolorandink #onesketchaday #sketchoftheday #drawingfromobservation #observationaldrawing #drawingfromlife #lifedrawing #draweveryday #sketch #sketchbook #illustratorsofinstagram #beachlife #drawingfromobservation #drawyourday #coloryourday #illustratedjournal #sketchjournal #lineandwash #penandwatercolor #beachday #waves #drawingchallenge #illustrator #illustration #animationart #visualdevelopmentartistsofinstagram

What a joy chatting with Claire about the process of creation and the ongoing journey of finding our creative voices! I loved the opportunity to sit down with an artist I deeply admire, commiserate about our challenges, celebrate successes and learn together. A validating conversation. And one I wish I could send to my younger self. (nudge nudge, younger self, keep going, you’re doing great.) Go to femmeon.show to listen to the episode. Show Notes: Alyson and Claire Keane (artist, illustrator of books including her most recent Little Wonder and visual development artist on films including Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Tangled and Frozen) talk about finding their creative voices. The conversation takes them through early obstacles, feeling like they had nothing left to say and being ready to give up entirely. And then, what next? Well, that’s what they talk about. How in order to keep creativity moving and sustainable, engaging with one’s voice (or tapping into the flow) is essential. It’s a fascinating conversation that will resonate with fans and artists and creatives. What is it like to create and what’s it like when creating is complicated? Come listen and find out! #femmeonpodcast #clairekeane #findingyourcreativevoice
