It can be a challenge to answer the question, “Where is that from?”
Most of the time, what I am wearing is something I have worked on myself, whether it’s a complete redesign or starting from scratch. From early childhood, I was collecting fabric, cutting, and sewing—making dresses out of plastic or a bolt of dead stock fabric. Whatever I could get away with. My school uniform was darned and repaired with safety pins and graffiti sewed into the lining. I suppose it became a work of art and a part of me.
For me, aesthetics and culture are things to be nourished and practiced through never-ending refinement on a theme. I have several collections waiting to happen in my head. Some are already drawn, some still taking form from nebulous half realized sketches. There’s always a way to micro-tune a seam, add or subtract superfluous over-design. I will take a pair of scissors and cut things off and replace them. To me, the inside is the most fascinating part, in the world of constructing a garment. Equilibrium and proportion in design are essential. To get the simplest design executed perfectly is what I do. The rest is decoration.
Whatever I do, I make ease of wear an essential part. Fabrics are essential, as are the deployment of design elements which often act as optical illusions that are employed to keep lightness and fluidity without the weight and scale overwhelming the garment. When doing something again and again, one realizes there is always scope to fine-tune and improve.
I may be speaking of Chanel here, but I have worked with many people and craftsmen. I have worked with every different budget known to man. Taste, imagination, and patience are three of the most important elements—the most important is taste. There is no right or wrong in questions of taste, it is particular to every artist. The beauty of human beings is every person sees or experiences something in their own way. I can only be true to my vision. Each garment I have made is an education in all of the above, and the friends I have made along the path are too numerous to mention.
This sequined coat has many stories to tell… I hope you enjoy it!

I am compelled to create and above all learn. Sometimes I wonder if it is worth it. I have a habit of disappearing into my work and I forget time, most practicalities which have precipitated some interesting situations😂 I can laugh now but really I’ve made my life supremely difficult. I long to disappear into the wilderness to collect my thoughts and #Sleep

@DaphneGuinness for the 25th Anniversary Issue, Under the Silver Moon, out now!
Daphne Guinness has lived a life immersed in art: growing up around the likes of Salvador Dalí, working with the late Karl Lagerfeld, and being encouraged by David Bowie to make use of her musical talents some fourteen years ago, introducing her to producer @TonyVisconti, who has helmed all of her offerings thus far, including her fourth and perhaps most ambitious album to date, ‘Sleep.’
The album is a layered and poetic evocation of optimism where there could easily be despair, and a glittering sonic telex of paradox—a kind of heavy yet insouciant intellectual disco ball that scatters light into some of the darkest corners of the human experience.
On her singing and songwriting, the musician says, “What I always attempt to do when I sing is to be as true to whatever it is that’s sort of coming in on a feeling level… I try to be as authentic as possible in my songwriting, and I do have to kind of hold myself back from trying to fit too many ideas into a song.”

@DaphneGuinness for the 25th Anniversary Issue, Under the Silver Moon, out now!
Today, aristo-musician, model-muse, and avant-garde designer Daphne Guinness releases the music video directed by @David_LaChapelle for her single “Volcano” from her newest,
yet-to-be-released album, ‘Sleep.’
This latest musical transmission distills Guinness’ life experience into a heady elixir of personal trauma, apocalyptic socio-political musings, and a takedown of late capitalism that provides a call for empathy and human connection.
On the apocalyptic themes throughout the album, Guinness says, “It feels like we are living through the end of something, and it does feel like we’re in very, very strange times indeed. But I think the way through all of that is to try and make something beautiful out of it, or describe it, because there is always a way of extracting beauty out of even the ugliest thing, and that paradox is wonderful.”
