“To be surrounded by powerful Black women in this process, it means a lot. There’s a level of safety that I think I didn’t realise I needed”. In a play written by a Black woman, Alice Childress, directed by a Black woman, Monique Touko and with Deborah Ayorinde herself starring alongside Bethan Mary-James, Diveen Henry and Lachele Carl, @itsdeborah finds safety in this space, as she prepares for her professional stage debut for Wedding Band at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre. We continue our conversation with Deborah, discussing the merits of acting on stage, the comfort of Alice’s writing and the importance of looking after yourself. Wedding Band opens on 31 May at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre – tickets from £10, head to lyric.co.uk for more information. Remember, for all things Black theatre (we’re talking discounts, recommendations, interviews and reviews) it’s the therendition.co.uk. 🎥Produced: The Rendition 🎧Music: remdolla
The rehearsal room for Wedding Band hums quietly with excitement as the company fill the space with smooth southern vocal warm ups — the company includes Deborah Ayorinde (Them, Riches) as she prepares for her professional stage debut as Julia in the UK premiere of Wedding Band by Alice Childress at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre. @itsdeborah has the type of energy that can only be described as magnetic, she leans in with curiosity and sincerity and we were fortunate enough to sit down with her to discuss her craft, honouring Alice Childress and the themes of the play. It was such an immense pleasure to photograph and interview @itsdeborah for @photobookmagazine. It’s not everyday I come across another artist whom I resonate with and admire so much. Upon discovering an old interview clip of Deborah where she discusses the importance of dismantling stereotypes of women in cinema, I knew right away we could collaborate on a more challenging and conceptual portrait series. Together, with an amazing team, we tackled 5 tropes of women in cinema that Deborah feels connected to which are further explored and explained in the accompanying article. I very much appreciate Deborah’s openness to work on a non-traditional portrait series as well as her candidness and honesty in our conversation after the fact. If you haven’t seen @themonprime by @littlemarvin I HIGHLY recommend giving it a watch – both installments. The subject matter is not easy to digest, but incredibly important. Please head to our story on photobookmagazine.com to view the whole series and read about my conversation with Deborah. We all have so much to learn from her, and I look forward to following the other roles she tackles in her career! @photobookmagazine #photobookmagazine Talent: Deborah Ayorinde @itsdeborah PhotoBook Editor-In-Chief: Alison Hernon @718blonde PhotoBook Creative Director: Mike Ruiz @mikeruizone Concept, Creative Director Photographer: Julia Comita @juliacomita Fashion Stylist: Alison Hernon at Exclusive Artists @718blonde @exclusiveartists Hair: Cheryl Bergamy for Exclusive Artists using Contents Haircare @cheryltbergamyhair Makeup: Brenna Drury @brennadmakeup Set Design: Tim Ferro @tferrodesign Photography Assistant: Brandon Abreu _@bandobrando Photography Intern: @angyyds Angélina Da Silva Fashion Stylist Interns: Hanna Flores, Yisha Li , Ana Mergil @hannaglfores @yishaliiii_ @anaamergil Tearsheets by Daniel López, Art Director, PhotoBook Magazine @by_danalarcon Interview by Julia Comita @juliacomita #editorialphotographer #juliacomita #femalecreative #femalephotographer #deborahayorinde #themonprime #littlemarvin #portraitphotographer
