While the Thunderbird bar wasn’t by request, it caught my eye and turned out to be a healthy option for a snack.
–
It had very little protein though, so pairing it with heard boiled eggs, meat, or other protein source will be important.

The Kirkland Signature protein bars also turned out to be a good choice. They were higher in protein and all of the ingredients surprisingly checked out!

Frozen foods that are healthy?

With prepackaged foods I’m looking for a good separation in carbs and fats, as well as higher amounts of protein.

We usually think of salads as “healthy” but most
of the time we end up adding huge amounts of fats, carbs, and of course calories to the mix.
–
By adding toppings that are sugary, deep fried crunchy items, and fatty dressing that are high calories or include sugars and carbs, we’re undoing everything we try to do with a salad to begin with.
–
I prefer to buy a base mix, add my own protein source, and then pair with fats OR carbs but not large quantities of both.

Are Kodiak products actually “healthy?”
–
There really wasn’t a lot of protein in the Kodiak muffins, pancake mix, or oatmeal. Plus, there’s a large amount of refined sugars in the mixtures – which I’m not a fan of. Refined sugars in our daily food intake spike blood sugar, increase insulin resistance, increase brain fog, leads to fatigue from higher blood sugar levels, and so much more. A little here and there isn’t the end but consistently bombarding ourselves with it is the opposite of “healthy.”
–
What we’re finding is that a lot of companies are labeling their products as a “protein” product or calling your attention to the amount of protein in the product. This is a marketing tactic that grabs attention BUT it does not mean it’s healthy for you.
–
Reviewing the nutrition facts for things like added sugars, sodium, etc is key.
–
Also, looking at the actual ingredients and seeing if there’s anything in there that doesn’t match what YOU personally will accept in your nutrition is another critical factor in staying healthy and finding a healthy balance in life.

Healthy food options at the end! 🥳

While all of these foods are generally considered “healthy” by most people, the fact is there’s saturated fats and carbs together in higher quantities in most of these selections.
–
When carbs and saturated fats are combined in higher quantities, it increases our bad cholesterol (LDL) and leads to plaque in the arteries.
–
Choosing an option that has either carbs & low fats OR ultra low carbs & higher fats (keto where your body will burn those fats), and always protein, will help keep LDL cholesterol low ☺️

Part 2 – Come with me to Costco to look at protein bars.

I’m always looking for protein bars that actually have a decent amount of protein in them. Many dieticians lean towards what is called the 10x rule for protein.
–
If you take the total amount of protein in a food and multiply it by 10, it should then be equal to or greater than the total calories in that food. This would qualify that food (or protein bar) as a high protein food.
–
With the Tru Bars though, there wasn’t a lot of protein, a pretty large amount of added sugar, and sunflower oil. Seed oils are high in linoleum acid (Omega-6) and higher amounts throws off our omega 3 : omega 6 ratio. The linoleum acid also breaks down to arachidonic acid which triggers our endocannabinoid receptors – triggering hunger cravings.

The RX bars however, were all natural with no added sugars. They could definitely use more protein BUT they aren’t marketed as a protein bar. So I would add a secondary protein source here (hard boiled egg, side of meat, etc.).

THE most common question I get on my live streams AND in comments.

People always ask how to figure out the total amount of calories their bodies use in a single day. Why? Because, like Stanford showed in 2018, it doesn’t matter WHAT you eat, if you’re in a deficit, you’ll lose pounds. BUT – WHAT you eat within that deficit determines if you lose body fat or muscle, if you’re starving all the time or if you’re full and satiated, your energy levels, AND the quality of your overall health.

This is perhaps the most important measurement when it comes to tracking your physique progress. All of your macros will be calculated based on the total number of calories that you are currently burning in a single day.
–
Once you know, this number, you’ll be able to accurately calculate all of your nutrition and all of your cardiovascular exercise to meet your goal.

Easiest way to track calories and macros…

In 2018, Stanford proved that if you burn fewer calories that you ingest, you drop pounds – end of story. It doesn’t matter what you eat.
–
BUT we know that WHAT you eat within that calorie deficit determines if you lose body fat or precious muscle. This is where macros come in (protein, carbs, and fats in every meal).
–
To be effective is your journey you MUST track these somehow.
–

Portion size and how full you’ll be afterwards are something I didn’t test though. Keep in mind, frozen foods are items I wouldn’t personally keep in hand in my freezer, nor would I make them a usual part of my nutrition. As a one-off, if you’re traveling or in a pinch, that’s when I would use these.

But remember, I never judge ☺️

The sodium content in the Atkins frozen dinner was through the roof. Higher amounts of sodium will lead to bloating and water retention AND additional hunger cravings per a 2017 study (reference below).
