Gina Gershon Instagram – “Let’s be clear: Russian human rights icon and 47-year-old lawyer Alexi Navalny did not “die” in prison today. He was either killed under orders from Putin or died by the stress deliberately created by locking him up for 30 years on baseless charges in a gulag north of the Arctic Circle where the temperature today is 27 below Fahrenheit. The idea Navalny suddenly collapsed and died after taking a walk (as reported by the prison) is patently absurd. He had been put in a “punishment cell” 27 times in prison, according to his lawyer.

I’ve personally been inspired by Navalny’s tenacity, wit, and courage over the years as we battled to hold Chevron accountable for its “Amazon Chernobyl” pollution in Ecuador. Navalny brilliantly galvanized millions of Russians to take on Putin through the electoral system. Along the way he exposed corruption at the highest levels of the Russian regime, penetrating the popular culture in the process. And he did it with humor, panache, savvy, and digital genius. He was a true giant and absolutely capable of beating Putin in a free and fair election.

I’ve seen this repeatedly is just about every country in the world, including in the US: when truth-tellers become too threatening to the power structure, those in command try to manipulate the “law” to snuff them out. Long prison terms under false or exaggerated charges and flat-out assassination are usually the tools. We’ve seen it here time and again: look at Malcolm X, Fred Hampton, MLK Jr., Leonard Peltier, Manuel Teran, climate leader Jessica Reznicek, and Julian Assange who right now is dying a slow death in prison for exposing our military’s war crimes in Iraq. (I got a little taste of this brutal treatment when I was locked up on baseless charges in the US for 993 days for helping Amazon communities in Ecuador win a landmark pollution case against the Chevron.)

Rest in power Alexi Navalny. Thank you for your high service to humanity. For showing us what real courage looks like. You are a far more inspiring and powerful leader than your adversary Putin.🙏💔💦👊👊 thanks for reposting @jillgoldman from #repost @stevendonziger
