The brilliant historian Greg Jenner has sent me a message to stand up for Louis in all of this, with some additional information: “He himself was born to a mother in reclining position, and he wasn’t perverted or just enjoying the view – he witnessed some births to ensure the children were legitimate babies, not swapped in (inheritance law was a massive deal)” I therefore apologise unreservedly to Louis and the palace of versailles for implying that he gained any sort of satisfaction from it. 🧐 But don’t take my word for it: The Evolution of Maternal Birthing Position, Lauren Dundes (1987) The Diseases of Women with Child and in Child-Bed, Francois Mauriceau (1668) (I mean, what a title 👀) And that final quote was from William Potts Dewees, the 3rd chairman of obstetrics at the University of Pennsylvania.
I just can’t, I just can’t. I just can’t control my feet 💃🌟 #hannahfry
So this is the reason I’ve been off gallivanting for most of the last year. My new 6 part series for BBC – Secret Genius. I’m really proud of it. It’s about the philosophy of innovation. About how we surround ourselves with technology that blends so seamlessly into the background that we’ve forgotten to remember how clever it is. It’s about the moments of human achievement, the extraordinary stories of invention and the genuine sparks of genius that have happened along the way. It’s also the first thing I’ve ever done on telly where I feel like I’ve finally had the chance to be fully myself. We’ve been stuck on the idea for a really long time that science telly needs to be upright and formal. I hope (hope!) this helps to break that trend. It’s playful and irreverent, with plenty of wit and warmth, without ever sacrificing on interesting stories or credible science. I hope you like it. Watch it on repeat on iplayer over the next six weeks for me will you, so I can go off gallivanting around the world for series two again? #secretgenius #bbc2 #whatareyouwatching #whattowatch

I asked my cameraman how to take a good photo and he said “you give the camera to me” 🤣📸

Sweet LA 🇺🇸
I finally found a way to vent 🤣✈️ #frequentflyer
One of the BBC big cheeses sent me a message last night about the film, and managed to hit the nail on the head of what we’ve been trying so hard to make. He said it isn’t a cookie cutter ‘celebrity sickness’ show, but a doc that has something much more interesting and unusual to say. A big part of the reason for that are the incredible people who allowed us to include their stories. There’s the inspirational Nina – full of courage and determination. There’s the wonderful Anne – who let us in during what must have been some of her darkest moments. And there’s the remarkable Rob – someone who profoundly changed my view of what matters in life. You’ll see why when you watch it. I hope the result is a doc that dares to ask genuinely difficult questions while holding on to a strong emotional core. Can’t wait for you to see it. Made by an extraordinary all-women core team, including: Harriet Bird, Director Charlene Chika Osuwagu, Producer Jane Greenwood, Editor Jess Jones, Composer Kat Bee, Production Manager Yasmin Heidary-Milic, Coordinator —————————————————— 9pm, BBC2 & iPlayer #hannahfry #watchthis #tonight #makingsenseofcancer #pickoftheday #allwomanteam #cancer #cervicalcancer #hysterectomy #bbctwo

Didn’t expect to feel quite so overwhelmed by all the beautiful, touching messages and stories you sent me after last night’s film. It’s strange, because after years on YouTube, I thought I’d lost the ability to be emotionally moved by something on the internet by now. But there we have it. So today I’m going to hide under a duvet with some Haagen-dazs and watch Princess Bride on repeat, hoping that overall I’ve done the right thing, and then tomorrow I’m going to be back to my normal sarcastic self 💅🏻. Thank you so much to all of you for watching. Anyone who missed it can watch the film Making Sense of Cancer on iPlayer for the next 30 days. Anyone outside the UK, you can listen to my Numberphile interview. I’ll put the links to both in my stories.
Here’s what I was doing at the weekend. Thank you so much for having us @two_wheels_for_life and @cosmicshamblesnetwork ❤️❤️ #motogp #moto2 #motorbike
In my job as a professor of mathematics, I am often asked why there are so few women in maths and related fields like physics, computer science and engineering, writes Hannah Fry (@fryrsquared), in a guest column for @theipaper. 🖋️ ‘This is borne out in the data: a gender disparity that starts in school and grows as students age. There is a serious under-representation of female talent in the world’s most powerful technology companies, and only around six per cent of mathematics professors are female. My response is always the same. It’s not one thing that makes women leave. It’s death by a thousand cuts. ‘Teeny tiny cuts like Katharine Birbalsingh, the notable education reformer, who told a committee of MPs that girls shun physics A-level as they dislike “hard maths”. Or the list of Field’s medalists (a sort of maths equivalent of the Nobel Prize) which has an almost embarrassing deficit of ethnic or gender diversity. Only two women have ever been awarded the prize in its long history. ‘If you’re on the receiving end of these tiny cuts, over and over, they reinforce the idea that you do not belong. It takes a great deal of resilience to counter that narrative.’ Read Fry’s guest column in full at the link in bio. ⬆️ 🎨 Illustration by @timaldii #maths #stem #sexism #theipaper #inews
This was worth getting up at 3am for. Really appreciated BBC Breakfast inviting me up to Manchester to talk about the film Making Sense of Cancer, and the massive, phenomenal response it’s had from the people up and down the country whose lives have been profoundly altered by the disease. I’m so grateful to all of you who have sent me your stories, I have hundreds of emails in my inbox from people who say the film managed to capture something that they too had experienced, but hadn’t quite been able to explain to others. It’s still up on iPlayer for the next month or so. It’s not an easy watch at times, but it’s surprisingly full of hope. Above all, it’s about working out what matters most to you, and empowering people to ask the right questions when it comes to their own care. Finally back in the right time zone after an epic month-long filming trip in the States 🎥 🇺🇸 Turns out making reels are a useful distraction from the jet lag at 4am. That and being very aware of just how lucky I am to get to live this life 🍀
