Last Tuesday I finished chemo. Shit is wild, do not recommend lol. I used Dignicap to freeze my hair and scalp for each session, which was a painful process but ultimately a success. Each time I went in, we hooked my head up to a machine that pumped below-freezing rubbing alcohol over my skull, to prevent the chemo drugs from permanently killing my follicles. It generated some of the most insane headaches I’ve ever had, and when we took off the cap, my hair was icicles. We also packed my hands and feet with ice to prevent nerve damage, and then slid some ice packets over my eyebrows and eyelashes to mitigate the shedding there, too. Without the ability to listen to headphones nor see anything, it was an hours-long meditative process, where I would imagine myself a Viking on the North Sea, or replay the ending of Titanic in my head. Either way, I’m done now. I went into this without any measurable cancer on my PET CT scans, nor any spread in my surgical margins. But being that it was a recurrence, my team wanted to be more aggressive to make sure we never had to do this again. Gonna do some radiation now, for the next few months. Let’s fuckin go, I have too much shit to do. All the love to my incredible medical team at Cedars, my stronghold of a wife @marychristinalaws, my local vigilantes @lacherlacherlacher and @hendisaok, and every one of you who gave me a virtual, physical, or emotional thumbs up as I did this. I’m incredibly grateful to be so lucky, whilest also laughing at being unlucky enough to have to do this at all. But you all made it easier. ❤️

I guess I’ll put this one on the grid. Back in Japan again
My grandmother was from Sweden, which was the catalyst for my interest in Scandinavian history. I read books like Neil Price’s extraordinary Children of Ash and Elm, or Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology, and took a class taught by @shieldmaidenpdx. When I had a recurrence of cancer, I romanticized my ice baths and ice gloves by imagining Viking warriors in the North Sea, facing impossible odds. Yesterday, @23andme released an update that searched archeological DNA records and compared them with your DNA, and I learned that I am directly related to the Vikings they’ve dug up in ship burials — and it blew my mind. Suddenly, it wasn’t just stories I was reading, it was family histories. Fucking insane.
