‘Finding Dementus’ Furiosa’s Dementus was not an easy character to get a grip on, ie to understand where he came from and what formed him … I found inspiration in despots, ‘gurus’ and showmen – with elements of all appearing in the final costume. His costumes were born in our tiny studio in Peckham, using motorbike gear, parachutes and of course a teddy bear! We tried all sorts of paint techniques, dye for the parachute, as well as various draping looks – well aware this could be a nightmare on a motorbike …! Later in Australia we were able to fit Chris Hemsworth and refine the whole look to suit everyone’s vision, with the final costume being a collaborative exercise as it should be on any film. So here are some photos of the ideas on the stands, figuring it all out with Lauren Reyhani and Stephen Miles, fitting and working with Dan Blacklock, Chris’s Key Costumer in Sydney, before shooting in Broken Hill. It was a journey, but a wonderful journey to make with Chris and George. @madmaxsaga @chrishemsworth @lauren_reyhani_costume @danblacklock08 @jasinboland

Brilliant to see the Furiosa trailer! Brings back so many wonderful memories, particularly of my fantastic crew. Here are some photos to celebrate them – every day coming into the workshop was joyous. We had a wonderful party before Lauren and I came home. Thank you ALL SO MUCH!! @chrishemsworth photo by @jasinboland This is her Odyssey. #Furiosa – Only in Theaters 2024 @madmaxmovie

I am still reeling from the extraordinary experience which is the Camerimage Festival in ToruÅ„. We were only there for 4 days – how anyone can last the full 7 days is a mystery to me, it is SO ‘full on’! Events, films, panels, talks, camera equipment … parties! Amazing. I was incredibly honoured to be awarded the ‘Golden Frog’ for Unique Visual Sensitivity’ (could there be a nicer award than a frog?). I met wonderful old friends and new, saw amazing historic ToruÅ„, learned about Copernicus in the fascinating museum and the talk on the colliding of science and film with Walter Murch and Professor Leszek Blaszkiewicz. My daughter Caitlin and I were wonderfully well looked after by Daria Piech and all the Camerimage crew. Next year … if I gather my strength! @camerimage.festival

I am delighted to have been asked to be part of a panel discussion for the British Hat Guild in Luton, centre of millinery supplies. Headwear is incredibly important when establishing a character and I am always amazed by milliners’ skills so this should be interesting. Do come! Details on @britishhatguild Instagram page. I am really looking forward to it, and to meeting the other panellists. Saturday October 14th 2pm at the Hat Factory Arts Centre, Luton. @costumedesign

A wonderful 2 days – James Ivory was in town for a BAFTA screening of his new semi autobiographical film ‘A Cooler Climate’ – a wonderful haunting experience. Jim is just the most amazing director ever – I can watch his films over and over and they just get better – the luck I have had to be a part of the Merchant Ivory family!
